18 Miles Later… August 30, 2009

It ain’t pretty, but it’s real.

18.15 miles.  2 hours 55 minutes. 9:30 minutes/mile.  Booyah.

A high protein, carbful post-run snack made me look feel slightly better…

Actually, if I am going to be honest with y’all, the run was awesome.  Long, but awesome.  Honestly.  I think since I work out best in the afternoon; going to the farmer’s market in the morning, eating breakfast and then heading out at 1:30pm was like the miracle formula.  The 6 Cran-Razz Clif Shot Bloks I took throughout the run probably helped too.

(P.S. I LOVE how everyone thought the banana was an ice cream cone…ice cream in the mornin’? Heck yah.)

After the run, I tried to eat intuitively; not shove down massive calories because I could (which, don’t get me wrong, was reallllyyyy tempting…).  And it worked!  I would eat, usually feel full for an hour or two then was massively hungry again. Vroom, vroom metabolism!

Then, being the wild n’ crazy grandma I am, I met up with my fabulous friend Brett for dranks (two Spotted Cow beers to be exact) then went dancing (and played wingwoman for him) at the local gay bar.  I<3 gay men.  Ummm…best. time. in a long time.  If you say dancing after running 18 miles, I am still there.  Good times were had, and I was in bed by 1am.  Perf.

This morning, I had breakfast in bed…

1/2 cup raspberries
1/4 cup Optimum Blueberry Cinnamon cereal

Weird Wednesday August 26, 2009

So if yesterday’s word of the day was “iffy,” today’s is “weird.”

I don’t know what’s going on peeps – has the sinus infection gone to my brain and is secretly screwing with the world? Today was plain and simply…weird. I felt weird, feel weird and work today, well…we acted like total weird-os (including a rendition of the Cha-Cha Slide in our office a.k.a. the classic wedding dance song).

Brekkie today was a new cereal I bought. Barbara (creator of our fave PB Puffins) has these Vanilla Almond Shredded Oat Squares and well, they tasted kinda weird.  Not bad, just weird.

Shoutout to Sarah for coming up with a challenge to make us all step outside the box (or bowl, whichever you prefer). The biggest surprise? The savory oats – I was totes scared to try them, but they were delish!

A couple of you dudes asked what the heck kohlrabi is. Well, technically our friend kohlrabi is in the cabbage family and looks something like this…

When you trim off the tops and outside skin, the inside looks like somewhat like a radish – white, translucent and uber-crunchy.  It’s the perfect (weird) snack food!

Mid-afternoon snack was the usual, plus a DC to try and get me out of this funk.  Yeah, the DC didn’t work.  I only felt nauseous after drinking it.

On the way homesky from worksky, I mapped out my weekly running sched.  Since I will be back in Minnesota this weekend, I think I am going to change my long 18 mile run (eeeeek, 18 friggin’ miles!) to Friday so I can have all day on Saturday to go to the MN State Fair (2nd largest in the country) and chow down on my top 3 fair foods: cheese curds, corn on the cob and Sweet Martha’s Chocolate Chip Cookies.

Yeah, it’s definitely going to be a greasefest, in which I will love every minute.

So, back to the story, I needed to run 9 miles tonight but instead, I am going to run 4.  That’s if I can get my butt out the door because this weirdness has me all up in a funk.  I know running will help, but tell that to my body who might need to be shoved, kicked and thrown out the door for encouragement.

When I got home, I should have just gone right away and ran but instead, I started dinner.  Shoutout to my girl April – the purple pepper is for you!

Ooh, before I forget, Michelle asked if there was a reason I bought expeller-pressed canola oil instead of just plain ol’ canola.  Always a reason, and here it is: expeller-pressed means there are no chemicals used in extraction.  This often results in a lower percentage of oil than using other methods requiring chemicals (which is why many companies DON’T do it).

Enough of my procrastinating and complaining right?  Weird is no excuse to skip marathon training!

Ever have one of those days where nothing really happens…you just go about your day and nothing is out of the ordinary spectacular or bad?  That was today para mi.

It started out with a delicious breakfast cookie, courtesy of our fave sista of fitness:

1/2 cup oats
2 tbsp. hemp protein powder
1 heaping tbsp. raw AB
2 tbsp. shredded coconut
1/4 cup skim milk
1 sliced banana

I don’t know what it is, but these just don’t fill me up!  Suriously, I was hungry like 3 hours later. I even did some nutrish calculating to see if I was getting enough sustenance…well, about 500 cals, 15 grams of protein and lotsa fiber should fill a gal up for reals!

Followed up with a yummy mid-morning PURE bar I won in Kristin’s giveaway, which I snarfed before my meeting (because it was one of those meetings where you are not sure how long it will last).

If I had to pick a lowlight of the day, this would be it.  I maybe drank like 1/6 of it – sorry POM, I normally love your juice but this tea was NOT cutting it.  I wasn’t even going to offer it to a co-worker.  That’s how much I did not like it.

At 5pm, I skedaddled home and out the door for a 6 mile run.  Done in just under an hour, it didn’t feel awesome but didn’t feel bad either.  See what kind of humdrum iffy day I am having?

Fortunately, dinner was anything but iffy.  In fact, it was sooo good and sooo satisfying!  Dindin hit the spot while watching The Office online, featuring the King of TWSS himself.  Michael Scott is probs my 2nd favorite character…Kevin is my first.  I can’t help it, everytime he does Kool-Aid man I seriously wet myself.  For the record however, I will one day become Mrs. Jim Halpert (or preferably, Mrs. John Krasinski).

I can’t believe I forgot to tell you all about the best part of my new job – I GET TO WALK TO WORK! Yep, that’s right.  I am exactly 1 mile from the ol’ workplace which means I get to save gas, avoid traffic and get a solid 2-mile walk in everyday.  It’s the little things that bring a smile to my face :).

New products also bring a smile to my face.  Since I joined our local co-op, I was given a bomb diggity coupon book full of awesome deals including this baber…

Mid-morning brought along a snack attack so I channeled Cleopatra and ate my grapes straight off the vine. Unfortunately, I had no man servants to fan me with banana leaves while doing so.

I met up with a dear, old friend for lunch who I hadn’t seen in awhile.  Unfortunately for you guys, it was one of those times when photographing your food isn’t really appropriate or important.  However, we went to a bomb diggity Costa Rican restaurant called (what else?), Cafe Costa Rica.

I had a ginormous vegetarian plate of rice, beans, plaintains, cilantro and tomato. Twas’ bomb diggity.

When I arrived back at work, I found out my presh co-worker baked a plethora of yellow cupcakes with chocolate frosting and sprinkles with a welcome reception para moi today!  So of course, my boss and I had a little fun with them before the guests arrived…

…and then I promptly devoured one.  Yellow cupcakes + chocolate frosting = classic bomb diggityness. 

The day flew by like whoa, and before I knew it, I was walking the 1 mile home.  Then I had a tough decision to make: go to yoga at 7:30pm or attack the pile of laundry sitting in my closet.  Unfortunately, the laundry won out.  In fact, I am actually blogging right now from the laundromat (thanks to some covert Wi-Fi stealing).

However, I did need some dinner sustenance beforehand.  No need to always go to a Chipotle for a burrito dudes and dudettes, the homemade kind is just as tasty…

Tasks for the evening:

  • Fold laundry
  • Put together IKEA kitchen storage (which knowing IKEA, could take 5 minutes or 5 hours)
  • Read blogs
  • Figure out which health insurance I want
  • Organize finances/make a budget

Yep, I’m officially a grown-up.

Apparently, I try to sidestep this fact by repeatedly using the word “bomb diggity,” hoping it will prolong my youth.

 

Running Well, Wedding Bells + Internet Hell August 16, 2009

Yep, that pretty much sums up my weekend.

Let’s start with the good stuff – I got up at 7am bright n’ early on Saturday morning and ate a nice carb-heavy pre-run meal consisting of a 1/2 cup Special K with 1/2 cup skim milk and a chocolate chip granola bar.  There is no better running fuel than pure white carbs.

Then, yours truly did what she has NEVER done before – run 16 miles!

The first 9 miles went well despite the Minnesota heat and humidity.  I made sure to make frequent water stops (also stopping to splash water on my head to cool down) before returning back to my friend Ashley’s where I popped 3 Clif Black Cherry Shot Bloks and some Diet Cherry Pepsi (don’t judge).  Then Ashley headed out with me to finish the last 7 miles, and my other friend Megan joined us for the last 3 miles.  My friends are seriously the best :).

In the end? The run went AWESOME.  I finished in my marathon pace of just under 10:00 minutes/mile, equaling about 2 hours and 40 minutes.  I seriously think I could have gone even further. It was that kind of glorious running day.

After lunchie, it was off to IKEA –  ummm, holy anxiety!  Soooo many people, soooo many things to look at and tooooo little time.  Luckily, I had my trusted Meggy Moo in tow.  If this isn’t a friend, I don’t know what is:

Then, I gussied myself up and headed off to my girl Charlotte’s wedding!  Charlotte and I studied abroad together in college in London, and we’ve pretty much been soulmates ever since.  LOVE that girl.  I also got to see Brittany (who also studied abroad with us) for the first time in years.  LOVE that girl too.

When I got home, I crashed harder than Lindsey Lohan’s career.

After almost 10 hours of glorious sleep, I woke up to coffee and a lovely chat with Ashley.  Then, right as I started contemplating eating Ash’s carpet, it was 10:30am and time for me to meet another fabulous lady you all know – Ms. Angharad!

We met at the Uptown Diner…looks like a total dive from the outside, but inside you will find such fabulous delicacies such as this…

After brekkie, I skedaddled back on the road (wasn’t I just driving?) back to Madison.  Five LONG hours later, I arrived safely.  After successful shopping trip #2 at the co-op (including a free coupon for a French Meadow bread product and a bottle of organic agave syrup – score!), I made it back to my apartment to find the Internet still not working.

I can’t handle this.  ATT is apparently coming on Tuesday to fix it, but that means another two days of paying for coffee at the cute coffeeshop for free Wi-Fi.  I guess there could be worse thangs…

I just scrolled through the post and realized it’s practically a marathon long, which by the way, the Twin Cities Marathon is in T-minus 49 days.  Eeeeeeek!

Meet my new love...McMac!

I can’t even express how hard I fell in love with McMac.  At first opening of the box, I knew me and him were meant to be.  He’s sleek, suave and ultra sophisticated.  Just my kind of guy.

The even better news?  The same day I got my new comp (shoutout to Daddy Everythingtarian for helping his dear daughter purchase said McMac!), my Internet equipment also came!  As of 8pm tomorrow, I will be with computer AND with Internet.  Release the doves and let the animals run free – freedom is here people!

I don’t think I even begin to say how much I missed y’all.  Even though moving into the new hippie abode has been taking up lots of time as has starting a brand new job, I knew something was missing from my day-to-day activities.  So THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU for being patient and sticking with me through all of it. Your dedication shall be rewarded my people.

Now, I sit happily blogging at the cutest lil’ coffeeshop (with free WiFi, yesssss!) around the corner from my apartment with a decaf skim chai latte (brewed with real tea bags…not the concentrate crap).  

Sidenote: If you drink cow’s milk, lowfat and nonfat milk are perfect post-workout recovery fuel.  It is the perfect balance of carbohydrates + protein to repair those muscles.  Just make sure you buy organic and preferably from small farms – hopefully the milk will come from happier cows :).

 

In happy moving news: I joined my local co-op which is a 5 minute walk from the apt!  It is adorable, stocks a plethora of of local, organic produce and fair trade products and I am part-owner.  I also joined a gym, which I really like so far.  I went to a yoga class on Monday that kicked my arse.  Love it.  Do you like how the two first two things I do when moving to a new city are find the nearest grocery store and gym?  Haha…that is healthy living dedication!

Alrighty peeps, I’m rollin’ out to go read blogs, spend quality time with McMac and pack for my weekend trip back home to MN for a wedding.  The weekend also might involved a lovely brunch outing with our fave Brit…wink wink.

After lunch, I got the job answer I had been waiting for!  I decided to take the job offer I got this last week!  Woowoo!  The only slightly sad part is that the job is back in Madison, Wisc. (my ol’ college stompin’ grounds), which means I have to leave Minnesota, which is so sad.  I have to leave new friends, like my fabulous new bloggy bud Angharad as well as my besties and family.  However, I am firm believer that everything happens for a reason – so I look forward to seeing what the future holds!

Suddenly, after I had made the decision, I was hungry again (haha!), hence this lovely…

Brad = suriously one of the funniest peeps ever.  Hence why, two hours later I found myself laughing hysterically, tearing up in laughter and definitely drunkity drunk drunk drunk on red wine.  He also pointed out that yesterday, I accidentally wrote I was meeting up with people from my, pubic relations internship” instead of what it should have been – “public relations internship.”  Just a slight difference between the two – he referred to it as a “hairy” situation ;).

After dindin, I may just have had a couple spoonfuls of vanilla ice cream to seal the deal for the night.

 

Now, I am feeling excited, overwhelmed and nervous for all the changes ahead.  I start my new job August 10th – eeeeeekkkk, that’s like less than a couple weeks!  So much to do, so little time.  I didn’t run 3 miles today like planned – I figured another day off to celebrate wouldn’t be the worst thing in the world :).
