Alright kids, hold onto your britches because we got a big one coming your way! Since there has been no “This and That” post this week, I am going to weave it into today’s.  So please, follow along (if you can).

First and foremost, I need to thank y’all for your “get out of a funk” suggestions yesterday.  Even though I’m not feeling completely out of the hunches yet, I just got back from a 3 mile run + yoga and am feeling lots better. Amazing what a lil’ endorphin rush can do, no?

Brekkie went unphotographed because I was inhaling my Barbara’s Vanilla Almond Shredded Oatmeal + skim milk plus a naner + AB as I was walking out the door.  Funny thing is, I wasn’t late for work.

Listen up peeps, this is how we do,
Delish dot com has some sammie ideas too.
I know y’all need some inspiration,
so pack up your lunch boxes for a meal celebration!

I was def a lil’ funkalicious throughout the day today, including splaying myself on the floor in our office.  Suddenly, our co-worker came barging in with a metal jousting helmet on and scared the bejeezus out of all of us.  Yes, a guy that works down the hall is a legit medieval times jouster.  No lie.

Lunchie was leftovers from last night’s Veggie Thai Red Curry

mmmm, mmmm good!

and some bluebs just for good measure

Miss Special K only treats us kind,
encouraging us to share yourself and mind.
Head on over to swap some goodies,
and share the love with all your fellow foodies!

After the red curry, I think the spiciness upset my tum-tum a bit so I dug into my snack a bit early…

CIMG4808

Chocolate Brownie PURE Bar (smaller than a business card - fo reals)

I know, I really need to get over the size of these bars.  However, the flavor? AMAZING.

My snacky lil’ girl with the fabulous face,
is VegTastic and leaving her fave place.
She giving away some uber-awesome schtuff,
so head on over because Kailey’s off the cuff!

Later in the afternoon, I let my funk get the best of me, and I dived (or dove?) into a handful of these…

CIMG4809

Milk Duds...my fave candy eva.

A handful of Raisinets might have also entered my mouth. And I’ve been reminded, some sour watermelon slices.

My new fave blog has the biggest prize,
Jessie’s got a Vita-Mix – ain’t no lie.
Enter now for this magic machine,
smoothies, sauces and goods – you will gleen!

After gorging myself on sugar and on the verge of a fructose coma, I finished up the day and walked my buns home. Then I threw on my running gear, ran 1.5 miles to the gym, sweated out with a 75 minute yoga sesh (FULL of downward dogs + chaturangas = sore arms) and ran 1 mile home.

Then I devoured the most delicious bowl of yog eva!

CIMG4813

Plain Chobani, mushed naner, buttloads of cinnamon, Vanilla Almond squares + raw AB

After dindin, I had a phone date with our fave Brit Angharad and now I gots to shower, clean this place up and hit the hay.

My bloggy changes are comin’ soon,
so don’t go leaving to rocket to the moon.
I promise the same stuff with a bit o’ sass,
peace out and much love from this g-ma lass!

Whoooooooo whooooooooo!

Weird Wednesday August 26, 2009

So if yesterday’s word of the day was “iffy,” today’s is “weird.”

I don’t know what’s going on peeps – has the sinus infection gone to my brain and is secretly screwing with the world? Today was plain and simply…weird. I felt weird, feel weird and work today, well…we acted like total weird-os (including a rendition of the Cha-Cha Slide in our office a.k.a. the classic wedding dance song).

Brekkie today was a new cereal I bought. Barbara (creator of our fave PB Puffins) has these Vanilla Almond Shredded Oat Squares and well, they tasted kinda weird.  Not bad, just weird.

CIMG4796

Barbara's Vanilla Almond Shredded Oats, skim milk + naner

Sarah’s Breakfast Challenge? Check.

Thursday: Oikos Strawberry Greek Yogurt + strawberries & AB+J sammie

Friday: Overnight Oats

Saturday: Plain bagel + bit o’ buttah

Sunday: Classic Bowl of Hot Oatmeal

Monday: Surprisingly Delicious Savory Oats

Tuesday: Breakfast Cookie a la Fitnessista

Shoutout to Sarah for coming up with a challenge to make us all step outside the box (or bowl, whichever you prefer). The biggest surprise? The savory oats – I was totes scared to try them, but they were delish!

Snackage included an Apple Cinnamon PURE Bar (my fave flav so far) while lunch included more wrappage…

CIMG4800

Hummus Avocado Ezekiel Wrap, kohlrabi + applesauce

A couple of you dudes asked what the heck kohlrabi is. Well, technically our friend kohlrabi is in the cabbage family and looks something like this…

Jellyfish? Sprouted brain? Paper weight?

Jellyfish? Sprouted brain? Paper weight?

When you trim off the tops and outside skin, the inside looks like somewhat like a radish – white, translucent and uber-crunchy.  It’s the perfect (weird) snack food!

Mid-afternoon snack was the usual, plus a DC to try and get me out of this funk.  Yeah, the DC didn’t work.  I only felt nauseous after drinking it.

CIMG4801

Pomegranate Chobs + strawberries (and Diet Coke)

On the way homesky from worksky, I mapped out my weekly running sched.  Since I will be back in Minnesota this weekend, I think I am going to change my long 18 mile run (eeeeek, 18 friggin’ miles!) to Friday so I can have all day on Saturday to go to the MN State Fair (2nd largest in the country) and chow down on my top 3 fair foods: cheese curds, corn on the cob and Sweet Martha’s Chocolate Chip Cookies.

Yeah, it’s definitely going to be a greasefest, in which I will love every minute.

So, back to the story, I needed to run 9 miles tonight but instead, I am going to run 4.  That’s if I can get my butt out the door because this weirdness has me all up in a funk.  I know running will help, but tell that to my body who might need to be shoved, kicked and thrown out the door for encouragement.

When I got home, I should have just gone right away and ran but instead, I started dinner.  Shoutout to my girl April – the purple pepper is for you!

CIMG4803

cut-up veggies ready for some red curry love

CIMG4804

Veggie Red Thai Curry over brown rice

Ooh, before I forget, Michelle asked if there was a reason I bought expeller-pressed canola oil instead of just plain ol’ canola.  Always a reason, and here it is: expeller-pressed means there are no chemicals used in extraction.  This often results in a lower percentage of oil than using other methods requiring chemicals (which is why many companies DON’T do it).

Enough of my procrastinating and complaining right?  Weird is no excuse to skip marathon training!

Help! How do YOU get out of a funk? Usually I work out, but you know how that is going right now…

Fun Lunch Friday August 15, 2009

Good morning dudes…I don’t think I’ve ever blogged this late.  Being a g’ma, it’s often hard enough just to find me up past midnight :).

Brekkie was especially delish this morning thanks to the tag team of champions: yogurt mess + Heart Thrive:

CIMG4638

nonfat plain yogurt + ground flaxseed + shredded coconut + strawberries + dollop o' raspberry jam (straight-up Smuckers - the good stuff)

Cranberry Heart Thrive Vegan Energy Bar

Cranberry Heart Thrive Vegan Energy Bar

Sorry Heart Thrive peeps…the Cranberry is BY FAR my least favorite.

However, my snack more than made up for it.  A homemade concoction of Banana Nut Cheerios + sunflower seeds a.k.a the ying (sweet) and the yang (salty).  Makes for maximum satisfaction.

I can’t believe I have totally forgotten to tell you how WELL my first week at the new job went.  My boss is fantastic.  My co-workers are incredibly helpful and funny.  And there is minimal scanning involved in the job.  Give it up!

Yesterday, we instituted Three Question Thursday at work a la Kristin, and today we proclaimed Fridays as “Fun Lunch Friday!”  Where is the most obviously funnest place to go ever?  Chipotle, obv!

CIMG4641

burrito bol: rice, black beans, mild salsa, fajita veggies, truckload of guac and lettuce

Shoutout to my homegirl Alison who recently had her first Chipotle and obv, loved it!

Friday flew by and before I knew it, I was done with my first week of work.  Woowoo!  Then, I skedaddled on to my new flat (yes, I want to be British so I am calling it “my flat”) to whip up a quick dindin before hitting the road BACK across the border to Minnesota for a wedding.

CIMG4644

black bean burger kale wrap

This bugger was delish!  Also quite easy to make: I sauteed lots of kale in EVOO + garlic (ends up tasting a lot like Kath’s “Kale Chips” – which if you haven’t tried, you must!) then stufffed it in an Ezekiel tortilla and topped with a Morningstar Spicy Black Bean Burger. Voila!  Dinner is served.

Not without some frozen applesauce for dessert of course…

Musselman's Blueberry Pomegranate Applesauce

Insert 4-hr. car ride here, including snacks:

CIMG4646

zucchini slices + almond buttah

I had maybe 1/2 the zucchini and 2-3 tbsp. of the AB…about?

After I finally arrived back in the Minneapolis, I met up with my besties for some drinks at the bar where our other bestie works.  Quite vague details, I know.  However, I had a slight headache and was uber-tired from the drive (anybody else MORE tired from driving than actually working out and doing something active?), so I munched on some bar popcorn (a couple cups?) and just chatted.  Drinks before a 16-mile run doesn’t sound like a good idea to me.

Tomorrow’s agenda: run, shower, IKEA run and then wedding time!  Woowoo!

Good night y’all and again, it’s good to be back 🙂

Eat, Shop, Run + Wed, Part 1 July 26, 2009

Here we go, here we go, kick it!

Dudes….get ready for a serious two-part MONSTER of a weekend post!

***FRIDAY***

Last time I left you all, the weekend had just begun!  I raced out of work and straight home to take care of the beast (1st priority) and then make some dindin (2nd priority).  The beast?  Check.  Dinner? Cheeccckkkk.

Appetizer: celery + almond buttah

Main Course: Amy's Green Tamale frozen meal

Verdict? Delish, as always.

Verdict? Delish, as always.

After dinner, I met up with my friend Meggy Moo for some Friday night shopping.  Does anybody else LOVE going to the mall on Friday nights?  Less crowds, more relaxed and better deals!  We hit up the Nordstrom’s Anniversary Sale, but naturally, even though so many things were on sale, they were still way too expensive for moi.  Ugh.

However, we did hit up Nordstrom’s Rack (like an outlet version of Nordstrom’s), where we found KILLER deals.  Two pairs of Hue tights in black and brown for $5 and a Trina Turk orange-striped cardigan for $40.  A girl just can’t resist a good bargain…

***SATURDAY***

I fell asleep Friday night knowing it was the big 1-3 mile run in the morn.  I got up and carb-loaded like a champ with about 7 cups of Banana Nut Cheerios and 1/2 cup skim milk (all I had left)…

Maybe not 7 cups...but definitely 2 or 3...

Maybe not 7 cups...but definitely 2 or 3...

My sister Alli, who is also running the marathon, came up to my neck of the woods to run with me.  What a difference!  Seriously, does anyone else find it way uber-easier to run with somebody else than just by themselves?  Mama Everythingtarian ran the first 6 miles with us, then went to meet up with my dad and younger sister while we completed the 13.  We walked warmed-up for the first 1/2 mile, ran 12 around the lakes, then took her easy and walked the last 1/2 mile.  Barbie, Ken and sissy #3 were waiting for us with water and bagels when we were done – hallelujah, I love you family!

After blasting through the awesome run, which took us about 2 hours (roughly 10 minute miles), I got back to la casa de mi prima and showered up to meet Angharad for lunch at the fabulous, organic, seasonal and locally-grown Birchwood Cafe!

Seriously, the is the 2nd time me and Miss Eating for England have met up, and it gets creepier and creepier each time with the number of things we have in common.  From traveling to jobs to loving Cher’s “Believe,” the blog heavens clearly knew we were meant to be friends.  Also, she had just run a 10K so we talked LOTS of running over a Green Goddess Salad for me…

CIMG4376

locally-grown lettuce, English hollow aged cheddar, sunflower seeds, carrots, snap peas, cucumbers, kohlrabi, scallion + green goddess dressing

That hunk o’ bread with a pat of butter on the side was pretty dang good too.  Angharad had the Cilantro Lime-Smoked Turkey Salad Sandwich, which also looks divine!  I totes forgot to take a pic, so head over to her blog and check that outtttt!

After lunch, it was wedding time!

Needless to say, it was an extremely fun night, and this gal was pooped.  I fell asleep on my sister’s shoulder on the car ride home, nuff’ said.

Stay tuned for Parte Numero Dos later tonight….now I have to skedaddle off to a wedding shower!  Hope you are all having a FABULOUSLY FUN WEEKEND – can’t wait to read and hear about what you all are up to!

Happy Sunday :).

Chipotle, Chobani + Chilled Mango July 24, 2009

Nothing like the three C’s to get you through the last day of the work week :).

Unfortunately, breakfast went unphotographed this morning for two reasons: (1) I was uber-late and ran out the door, very similarly to the way I bolted out of our living room growing up when my sisters forced me to watch E.T. (my least favorite movie ever), and (2) it wasn’t that pretty – simply a bowl of Banana Nut Cheerios + skim milk alongside a pack of Mrs. May’s Cran-Blueberry Crunch.

Lunch was a whole lot better, thanks to Senor Chipotle

1 scoop rice
fajita veggies
black beans
mild salsa
lettuce
lotsa guacamole

A couple exciting things actually happened on this funny lil’ Friday – first, I got a job offer!  However, I have another interview for a job on Monday and am waiting to hear back on another job.  Sooo…I haven’t made up my mind yet, but after searching for a full-time, permanent job for more than a year, it finally happened!  Hallelujah, for reals.

Not to get too deep here, but let’s just say I have been working my tail off the past year to try and find a job since returning back from Thailand.  It’s been frustrating, confusing, annoying, hopeful, joyful, angry and a test of my patience the whole time – it just goes to show perseverance does pay off my friends.  Yay!

The other exciting thing?  I won a giveaway – thanks to Ms. Erin from I Walk in this World!  Both things are definitely a good way to start off the freakin’ weekend.  However, so is this…

CIMG4364

Peach Chobs + Zoe's Honey Almond granol

And this…

I was gettin’ my Snackface on today :).

A special Friday happy birthday shout-out to Traci, a fabulous Healthy Everythingtarian reader, who has a big birthday this weekend!  Also, head on over to Eating for England and wish Angharad good luck on her 10k race tomorrow!

What are your plans for the weekend?  I’ve gots a 13-mile marathon training run in the morning with my sister, grabbing lunch with Angharad then off to a wedding tomorrow night.  Sunday is more wedding shenanigans with a wedding shower, then I am heading off to Wisconsin for another job interview on Monday.  It’s gonna be a busy one!

Woowoo for the weekend!

She’s Like the Wind July 9, 2009

Or rather, time is like the wind because this day absolutely positivefrickinlutely flew by.  But I do still love a good “Dirty Dancing” reference.  Nobody puts Baby in the corner :).

Breakfast started out fantastically, thanks to the lovely Sarah from Running to Slow Things Down.  You see, this genius of a gal took the standard breakfast cookie recipe and turned it into Breakfast Drops!  (BTW – I can totally see why she didn’t call them Breakfast Balls – there is just something inherently wrong with that ;)).  Mine were of the ol’ strawberry + coconut variety, and I loved every last drop!

CIMG4139

Like I said, the morning flew by and before I knew it – bam! – 11:30am and my tummy was rumbling!  Good thing for another killer sammie (same as yesterday) – 2 sliced toasted Ezek, 1/2 smashed avocado, cherry tomatoes, spinach + yellow mustard.  Along with two clementines, it was a good, satisfying lunch.

CIMG4142

CIMG4143

Work was supa busy today!  I would look at the clock and suddenly two hours had flown by.  That like never happens.  Unfortunately, I didn’t get out on a lunch walk today but instead worked on a freelance writing project.  Sometimes a girl has got to make sacrifices!

Luckily, my snack made up for the missed walk.  You know how I haven’t exactly been diggin’ the Zoe bars?  Well, I take that back because this Chocolate Delight bar was well – delightful!  It didn’t have any of the funny after tastes the peanut butter and peanut butter chocolate ones did and was perfectly chocolatey.  Nice work Zoe!

CIMG4144

Since my 9 mile run was planned for after work, I had snacky #2 around 3:30pm as pre-run fuel.  The standard combo: Stonyfield vanilla + blueberries + Zoe’s Cranberry Currant granola.  I think my favorite way to eat Zoe granola is as a topper in yogurt – it gives the whole thing the perfect sweet crunch!

CIMG4147

After work, I’m not going to lie – I was dreading the 9 mile run.  However, I tried not to think about it.  Instead, I got dressed, laced up the tennies and headed out the door (before I could rationalize not going, because if you give me long enough – I can rationalize ANYTHING).  The first mile was a lil’ rough but I fell into a groove after that.  However, it got raging hot out, my yogurt combo wasn’t sitting too well, and in the end, I had to stop at just over 5 miles.  I walked for another 1/2 mile or so, then guzzled this baby:

CIMG4148

The Vitamin Water 10 was good – I am still a bit skeptical just how “naturally sweetened” it is.  They use rebiana (stevia extract) along with some others I am not sure about.  Anybody heard of erythritol or crystalline fructose?

I came home a sweaty beast and made this colorful concoction:

CIMG4152

Tempeh Thai Red Curry!  Totally delish!  I made dinner for myself, my sissy and her boyfriend and it got rave reviews all around.  My sister – who FYI has a sensitive stomach, doesn’t like anything “weird” or “organic” and is not a spice monster – even ate it.  You don’t know how big of a day this is for me!  The mix included:

brown rice
TJ’s Thai Red Curry Sauce
bean sprouts
onion
tomato
carrots
spinach
1 pkg. three grain organic tempeh

And what’s dinner without somethin’ sweet?

CIMG4154

That would be 1/2 Monster Cookie to be exact.

Soooo…this gal will be running her 9 miles on Sunday instead.  Ugh, lil’ upset over the run, but I think I might have the ultimate pancake concoction tomorrow morning that is going to blow Miss Chocolate-Covered Katie’s pancake contest out of the water!  Stay tuned tomorrow for all the monster (hint, hint!) goodness ;).

Shower, recipe research, grocery store, freelance writing, possible SYTYCD results show and off to bed.  Woowoo for the weekend – tomorrow is Friday!

Whatcha all up to this weekend?  I’m heading off to my friend’s cabin – holllllaaaa!

A lil’ seriousness from yours truly… July 7, 2009

Throughout the past couple weeks, as I’ve delved farther into the fabulous world of food blogging, I’ve been thinking.  Yes, thinking.  Now, don’t be scared.  I am constantly thinking.  My mind doesn’t shut off in fact.  I believe Liz Gilbert said it best on page 132 of “Eat, Pray, Love,” (one of my favorite books eva!).

“Like most humanoids, I am burdened with what the Buddhists call the “monkey mind” – the thoughts that swing from limb to limb, stopping only to scratch themselves, spit and howl.  From the distant past to the unknowable future, my mind swings wildly through time, touching on dozens of ideas a minute, unharnessed and undisciplined.”

Food blogging is a funny thing.  For me, it is not only about holding myself accountable for leading a healthy life, exploring a creative outlet and meeting fabulous new friends (because I do, in all honesty, consider you all friends). It is about learning from others, exploring new ideas and making leading a healthy existence FUN.  Because, damn it, we all need more fun and humor in our lives!

I love seeing all the new ideas other bloggers have – from recipes to workouts to funny sayings.  Would I have ever tried TJ’s raw almond butter without the advice of this lady?  Probably not.  Would I have learned to concoct the most creative bowl of oatmeal known to man?  Definitely not.  I mean, I don’t think I had ever used the words “food baby” or “mayjuh” in my life.  Where would I be now without all these people?  All these reasons and all these people are just some of the many reasons why I love food blogging.

However (you just knew this was coming, didn’t ya?), I think what is more important here is to remember that we are all individuals.  Some of us think olives and Amazing Grass taste like poo (that’s me!). Others know they need to avoid sugar.  Some of our tum-tums just can’t take too much dairy.  Others have fought and are fighting against stereotypes both women and men face on a daily basis.  Some of us are too friggin’ hilarious.  Others take such pretty food pictures, I want to eat the computer screen at work.  There are definitely people who are total running machines.  Some people’s spirits just jump right off the computer screen.  The moral is: we are all different.

Which leads me to the main point:  our bodies are also all different.  I encourage every one of you to read blogs, try new things (vegan? vegetarian? meat eating? raw food? fast food? slow food?) and experiment.  Don’t ever be afraid to try something new.  However, don’t get so wrapped up in following certain plans, ideas and people that you forget to stop listening to YOUR body.  Some of our tums can handle more than others, and what works for someone else may or may not work for you.  Don’t ever feel bad or wonder whether you should or should not be eating something.  Your body will tell you that.  For instance, if you haven’t noticed, my consumption of soy has rapidly decreased since starting the blog and skim/oat/almond milk is in abundance.  I figured out soy (more specifically, soy milk) was really hard for my stomach to digest and caused me some, ah, errrr…pooping problems?  We’re all friends here :).

So yes, I’ve been thinking.  Not anything too life changing, but something I think I need to remind myself of sometimes.  Listening to my body isn’t always easy, but I feel the extra effort will be well worth the prize: the best, most authentic me I can be.

Until my monkey mind swings back into action onto the blog again, here are the eats from today:

CIMG4116

Power breakfast of champions: Zoe's Cranberry Currant Granola w/ vanilla almond milk & a naner

CIMG4118

Plus a scoop of TJ's AB for good protein satiety 😉

CIMG4119

Scoop cilantro rice, black beans, fajita veggies, mild salsa (aka tomatoes), lettuce + the best guac eva!

Thanks for listening :).  Here is my agenda for the evening:

  • Target run (hoping for under $30!!!)
  • 3-mile run
  • Vinyasa Yoga class
  • Beddy bye

Be well my friends :).
