Madison a.k.a. the state capital of Wisconsin yo!

Welcome ladies and gents, children and babies, friends and families to the home of cheese – WISCONSIN (pronounced Wiss-cahhhhn-sin if you are from the Midwest)!  I thought y’all might like a little pic of where yours truly roamed her college days as well as current days.

FYI: The State Capitol’s dome is one of the largest in the world.  Ya heard it here.

Flashback to last night…

Believe it or not, I got EVERYTHING done on my to-do list, with a few modifications of course.  I scrapped the Mint thang because online budgeting was too dang confusing.  Instead, I relied on my old friend Excel to whip up a nice lil’ spreadsheet.  Second, I found no plug-in converter at Target and forgot the oven cleaner.  However, I did pick up some cooking spray, butter, a dress and the new Shape magazine.  Damn you Tarjay!

POM Pomegranate Hibiscus Green Tea

The lovely peeps at POM (shoutout to you Molly!) sent me some of their POMx tea to try.  It’s got a new name, new flavors and is light!  It’s real brewed tea with 100% POM juice and other natural flavas.  I’ve also got Pomegranate Lychee Green Tea + Pomegranate Wildberry White to try!

After reading the label (always a must!), I have one small frustration: fructose + erythritol-sweetened.  Although these claim to be “natural,” we all know the truth from the Vitamin Water 10 shenanigans of yore.

This mornin’…

With 15 miles on the brain, I set my alarm for 7am.  That way I could eat, wait an hour then venture out around 8am to get the torture party started.  Unfortunately, the allergies + cold that has been brewing all week reared its head when my alarm went off.  Hence, hit the snooze and slept for another hour.

I woke-up at 8am, still not feeling the greatest (think sinus headache, sore throat + phlegm), but I downed a plain white bagel with a bit o’ buttah and read some bloggies while I let the food settle.  Then I geared up and headed out!

Distance: 15.04 miles (according to MapMyRun)

Time: 2:50

Average pace: 10:00/mile

No, I don’t have a Garmin – these are estimates done the old-fashioned way!  If you are a math whiz, you will see 10:00/mile for 15 miles does not equal that time.  However, I am taking into consideration a crapload of stoplights I had to wait for, two Clif Shot Blok + water breaks (2-4 minutes each) and MapMyRun error.

By the way, head over to Matt’s blog at No Meat Athlete for an awesome guide to surving a 1/2 or full-marathon!

Overall, the run felt pretty good.  I definitely felt sinusy (is that a word?), so I just kept it nice, steady and slow.  The weather was fabulous (60 degrees when I left the house – PERFECT) and since I did it alone with no music or friends running with me, I was very happy.

Happier to devour this when I got home though…

CIMG4751

Pineapple Chobs, Cherry Cashew PURE Bar + strawbs (along with a swimming pool-size water)

I forgot to mention this to ya yesterday, but I got my own swag bag of goodness in the mail yesterday from winning Kristin’s giveaway.  Go check out her DROOLWORTHY photographs and show some love to a fellow Midwestern!

PURE bars, PURE tees and a PURE bag

PURE bars, PURE tees and a PURE bag

By the time I got home, talked to the ‘rents, showered, ate + grabbed a Cafe Au Lait (1/2 skim milk + 1/2 coffee), I missed most of the Madtown Farmer’s Market :(.  However, I did score 1 bunch of leeks + 1 bunch of beets for $2 from a stand just closing up.

Then it was time to visit a Madison landmark…Ian’s Pizza!

CIMG4755

no need to adjust your screens...that is in fact MAC N' CHEESE pizza!

You have no idea how many pieces of this has been consumed by yours truly at about 2:15am on a Saturday night (slash Sunday morning) back in the college days.

I arrived back at la casa de Holly, having shopped around for about 4 miles.  So yes, my legs hate me right now. Hence why I am going to finish chomping my Banana Nut Cheerios + sunflower seeds and finish dranking my green tea + Emergen-C packet to kick this allergy cold and make some dindin.  Gots lots of fruits and veggies to make up for!

Some q’s, just because I like to get to know y’all better…

(1) What is your state capital? Obv, look above.

(2) What is your favorite cheese?  Gruyere…I’m classy like that.

(3) What is your favorite pizza?  Cheese for everyday ordering, Mac n’ Cheese on special occasions.

If you want to win those new, elusive Lara flavors, you have until Sunday night!  Write me a lovely limerick about your fave Lara here and get entered for 1 of 3 chances.  Woowoo!

This day was both long but uber-productive (minus the fact I did not make a budget or figure out which insurance to choose last night).  For your reading pleasure, here is a step-by-step guide to a day in the life of The Healthy Everythingtarian herself:

6am: My alarm goes off and seconds later, the snooze button is promptly hit.

6:10am: I finally crawl out of bed and haphazardly throw on mismatched running clothes.  I look like I’ve been hit by a bus.  When you have curly hair as I do, the morning is always a surprise as to what shape your hair has been molded into from the night before (this morning: a Medusa + Carrot Top mix)

6:20am: I walk reluctantly out the door and begin my 4-mile run.

7am: I arrive home, stretch a bit before deciding I’m too dang hungry.  I abandon stretching in favor of this:

Peanut Butter Puffins w/ skim milk + naner w/ AB

Peanut Butter Puffins w/ skim milk + naner w/ AB

7:15am: Since I eat mondo fast, it takes only mere minutes to shovel down breakfast before hopping in the shower.  I follow that up with getting dressed, taking my multi-vitamin and spritzing on perfume (Burberry London, in case anyone is wondering).

7:30am: To save myself time, I decide today is going to be a “no make-up day,” although I tell people it’s to let my skin breathe in the fresh air.  In reality, I’m lazy.

7:40am: Out the door to grab a coffee and walk the 1 mile to work.

7:47am: I decide I am not feeling hot coffee after a hot run and choose this instead:

gun powder green mint iced tea

gun powder green mint iced tea

8:05am: I arrive at work, talk to my boss (who is leaving for Paris today – super jealous) and turn on the comp.  I do the norm morning routine – check the e-mail(s), People.com and my bank account.  I save the bank account for last because usually I try to put off knowing how poor I am for as long as I can. Then I work.

11am: My stomach is wildly grumbling.  Enter in new fave snack:

CIMG4700

Banana Nut Cheerios (sweet) + sunflower seeds (salty)

12:30pm: I take a working lunch, knowing the Internet guy could call at any minute…

more sweet red jewels (a.k.a. grapes)

more sweet red jewels (a.k.a. grapes)

CIMG4703

veggie tikka masala w/ a Morningstar spicy black bean burger thrown in

2:30pm: The ATT repairman calls!  My co-workers know how important this is to me, so one of them gives me the keys to her car to drive back to my apartment to meet him.  I spend the next hour laying on the floor while Jerry plays with the antique wires (I live in an old building – I like to say it has “character”).  I fiddle around wondering if it will ever get fixed….suddenly, all the lights turn green on the modem!

I HAVE INTERNET!  THANK YOU WORLD!

3:45pm: I head back to work in a jovial mood.  Then my dad calls to say he will be driving through Madison on his way back from a work event.  You know what that means?  Free dindin!  I munched on a serving (and 1/2) of these honey wheat pretzels on my way back to the office:

locally made goodness

5pm: Daddio picks me up, and I show him the new apartment (ahem, flat).  Then we head to the cutest lil’ pizza joint around the corner from my place where we have some kick arse salad + ‘zza:

as a substitute, Daddy Everythingtarian graciously let me photograph his sausage, green pepper and 'shroom pizza

6:30pm: Daddio has to leave and drops me back off at work to meet with my co-workers to go grab some dranks and spend some quality work family time together.  I love them already.

CIMG4708

A Wisconsin classic...Spotted Cow Beer

10pm: I arrive home after laughing my arse off all night.  Blogging time – now that I have Internet, I am happily blogging from the comfort of my bare living room.

11pm: (Which for the record, is in 12 minutes) I crawl into bed, lights out and do the dang thang again bright and early in the morn.  Minus the running.

Stay tuned for an extra special “This and That” post tomorrow…(insert witch cackle here)!

Running Well, Wedding Bells + Internet Hell August 16, 2009

Yep, that pretty much sums up my weekend.

Let’s start with the good stuff – I got up at 7am bright n’ early on Saturday morning and ate a nice carb-heavy pre-run meal consisting of a 1/2 cup Special K with 1/2 cup skim milk and a chocolate chip granola bar.  There is no better running fuel than pure white carbs.

Then, yours truly did what she has NEVER done before – run 16 miles!

The first 9 miles went well despite the Minnesota heat and humidity.  I made sure to make frequent water stops (also stopping to splash water on my head to cool down) before returning back to my friend Ashley’s where I popped 3 Clif Black Cherry Shot Bloks and some Diet Cherry Pepsi (don’t judge).  Then Ashley headed out with me to finish the last 7 miles, and my other friend Megan joined us for the last 3 miles.  My friends are seriously the best :).

In the end? The run went AWESOME.  I finished in my marathon pace of just under 10:00 minutes/mile, equaling about 2 hours and 40 minutes.  I seriously think I could have gone even further. It was that kind of glorious running day.

Indian buffet of love from Whole Foods...with a Cilantro Chutney Samosa!

Seriously…if I could marry Indian food I would.  Shhhhh, don’t tell McMac I am cheating on him ;).

After lunchie, it was off to IKEA –  ummm, holy anxiety!  Soooo many people, soooo many things to look at and tooooo little time.  Luckily, I had my trusted Meggy Moo in tow.  If this isn’t a friend, I don’t know what is:

on the floor checking the unmarked chair for a price...that is love right there

Then, I gussied myself up and headed off to my girl Charlotte’s wedding!  Charlotte and I studied abroad together in college in London, and we’ve pretty much been soulmates ever since.  LOVE that girl.  I also got to see Brittany (who also studied abroad with us) for the first time in years.  LOVE that girl too.

Yeah, that’s right.  My girl Char had a plethora of CHEESECAKES at her wedding instead of regular ol’ wedding cake.  That is reason #4,276 that we are friends.  Brittho and I may have split an additional piece of Key Lime Cheesecake.  Just sayin…

Did I mention Charlotte also had a photo booth AND late-night pizza?  Reasons #3,231 and #6,121,989 we are friends.

When I got home, I crashed harder than Lindsey Lohan’s career.

After almost 10 hours of glorious sleep, I woke up to coffee and a lovely chat with Ashley.  Then, right as I started contemplating eating Ash’s carpet, it was 10:30am and time for me to meet another fabulous lady you all know – Ms. Angharad!

We met at the Uptown Diner…looks like a total dive from the outside, but inside you will find such fabulous delicacies such as this…

CIMG4670

CIMG4673

french toast kamikaze-style (aka with bananas, blueberries & pecans) para moi

After brekkie, I skedaddled back on the road (wasn’t I just driving?) back to Madison.  Five LONG hours later, I arrived safely.  After successful shopping trip #2 at the co-op (including a free coupon for a French Meadow bread product and a bottle of organic agave syrup – score!), I made it back to my apartment to find the Internet still not working.

WTF?!?!?!?!

I can’t handle this.  ATT is apparently coming on Tuesday to fix it, but that means another two days of paying for coffee at the cute coffeeshop for free Wi-Fi.  I guess there could be worse thangs…

Ah, home sweet home.

After getting really frustrated and angry speaking calmly with the Internet peeps, I needed a snackie.  Enter in perhaps, my other new love (sorry McMac AND Indian food :()

I just scrolled through the post and realized it’s practically a marathon long, which by the way, the Twin Cities Marathon is in T-minus 49 days.  Eeeeeeek!

Bloggy thangs I still have planned (even if they are taking uber-longer than I expected):

  • Marathon training post
  • Holly Investigates… post (It’s been 75% done for like three weeks now!)
  • Two exciting announcements
  • Updates

Hang in there my children…mama WILL eventually get there!

Now, I am downing the rest of my drank and gettin’ down to read some bloggy love!  Say a prayer for my Internet por favor and have a relaxing Sunday night!

Highlight of the weekend?  Put it out there peeps!  Mine was probably the amazing run on Saturday morning and the pictures Char, Britt and I took in the photo booth.  They were epic.

Pizzaliciousness August 2, 2009

Warning: You are in for a monster of a post my friends; so buckle up and let’s roll out!

Let’s flashback to Friday night….dinner was simple and tasty.  Most importantly, it was on the table within 10 minutes of arriving home from work.

Simple is best, no?

After dindin, it was me + 500 Days of Summer, which equated to a perfect solo night to recharge the batteries.  I headed to the indie theater in Minneapolis and thorough enjoyed the quirky, romantic comedy of a movie.  Not only do I have a crush on Joseph Gordon-Levitt (3rd Rock from the Sun, anyone?), but I officially also now have a girl crush on Zooey Deschanel (who also happens to be on the new cover of SELF mag!).

When I got home, my sister, her boyfriend and I spent the next 1 1/2 hours reading Texts From Last Night.  Completely inappropriate?  Of course.  Completely hilar?  Obv.

I slept in until 9am Saturday morn (that is late para mi!) and enjoyed a nice brekkie pre-run…

zoe's cinnamon raisin granola + cinnamon raisin smartstart + skim milk + POM juice

zoe's cinnamon raisin granola + cinnamon raisin smartstart + skim milk + POM juice

About an hour or so later, I bounded out for a 10 mile run.

Ummm…yeah, it didn’t go so hot.  I felt out of shape (hadn’t run since last Saturday), my chest was uber-tight and I miscalculated my run.  For some reason, I thought the route I planned was 10 miles, but it ended up being 8.  Don’t ask how I messed that one up.

I’m chalking that one up to getting back in the running groove. Since I haven’t done yoga in forev, I took more time to stretch myself out post-run while eating these…

CIMG4526

one pound of strawbs consumed

Oops…I forgot to mention the other pound of strawberries (a 2 lb. container for 4$!) was consumed yesterday afternoon.  Yes, that means I’ve consumed 2 lbs. of strawbs in two days.

Lunchie made me feel better after the crappy run because I met one of my besties Megan out at Davanni’s – our date restaurant of choice!  This is what we ALWAYS order…

After scarfing down 4 pieces and two Diet Cokes (it’s tradition!), we bebopped over to Target in search of Miss Fit herself…

jillian oh jillian, how i've needed thee!

Yes, that’s right, I am totally behind the times and JUST picked up Jillian’s 30-Day Shred!  Meg and I started talking about it at lunch because she wants to get uber-fit for her sister’s wedding in a month, so we tag teamed it and are going to Shred together!  Hot bods here we come!

Last night = top night.

I met Angharad from Eating for England out for dinner wine.  Lots more wine was consumed than food :).

notice how the pizza is still untouched but the glass of wine is definitely already half drank

We met up at a cute lil’ local pizza joint where Angharad’s hubs works and started off with what else? RED WINE.

Throughout our night of consuming one to many glasses of above said alchoholic beverage antioxidants, Angharad and I totally got to girl chat, gab, discuss and have some fabulous conversation.  I am honestly SO SAD that I only met her recently, and now I am moving to Madison :(.  It was obvious the blog heavens wanted us to be friends, so naturally we’ve already planned meet-up date #4.

CIMG4540

cheers to new fabulous friends!

Also, I must note: Dan (her hubs) is equally as awesome.  Not only does he make killer pizza, but the man was the first person to challenge me whatsoever in the Countries of the World game on Sporcle.  Mad props Dan. Mad props.

This morning…not going to lie…slightly hungover.

Slight headache? Check. Slight gut rot? Check. Slight nausea? Check. Yep, def slight hangover.  I’ve downed a Nalgene of water this morning already, a slice of whole wheat toast with spread and took some Ibuprofen, so actually I’m not feeling too bad.  It was so worth it.

Special K w/ Red Berries, Blueberries + Skim MIlk

Special K w/ Red Berries, Blueberries + Skim MIlk

Also, I woke up at 8am (norm time) then fell back asleep until 10:30am!  Ummm, that happens like never.  Seriously, it felt so glorious, I can’t even tell you.

However, now I need to get a jumpsky on Sunday!  Possible schedule for the day (in random order)…

  • Coffee (this WILL be first)
  • Start the Shred (due to Drinker’s Remorse, sometimes I feel the need to punish my body for the activities of the night before)
  • Stop at the Goodwill to drop off donation
  • Pool
  • 7pm Yoga/Pilates Fusion class
  • Clean out car
  • Light grocery shopping
  • Organize finances
  • Bloggy thangs + bloggy reading

We’ll see if anything actually gets done…

Friends, Family, Fun, French Toast May 17, 2009

It’s all about the “F” this weekend – fun being the most important word of course!  Even my 11-mile run yesterday went AWESOME, despite some rather chilly and windy conditions.  I left the house at exactly 9am and 11 miles later, returned at 10:40am – 9 minute miles!  I was pleasantly surprised with my time…between the weather and running the long one by myself for the first time in a couple weeks, I expected way worse :).

After I got back, I drank about a whole Nalgene water bottle and stretched my muscles for a good while.  Stretching is IMPERATIVE after running.  Running actually shortens your muscles, rendering you less flexible.  By taking the extra 10 to 15 minutes to stretch (especially after a long run!), it will dramatically help your flexibility and make you feel a bajillion times better.  I promise!

After the run, I scrounged up what I could from what’s left of the food stash – a strawberry spinach salad with a sprinkle of walnuts and almonds and lemon honey vinaigrette (EVOO, honey + lemon juice).  With it, I had a small bowl of granola topped with vanilla soymilk and a heaping spoonful of shredded coconut.  Coconut on cereal might just be my new fave!  With some gorgeous lilacs…

After eating, it was family time!  We had a party for my uncle yesterday, so on the way, I grabbed a lil’ Saturday java boost (coffee with 2% milk) and headed to the par-tay!  I got to see one of my favoritest people in the world – my cousin Tom’s son Jonas.  We were born on the same day actually, so we are kind of bonded in that way.  Isn’t he just the cutest thing ever?

At the party, I dipped into the fruit stash for some apples and strawberries (multiply this amount by 2 – I went back for seconds) then enjoyed some of my uncle’s famous beans with tortilla chips and two small lemon bars.  It was sooo good!  Unpictured was of course, a Diet Coke to go along with it all!

The portion on the beans and bars may look bigger than it is, because late afternoon I was getting hungry again.   My mom happened to have an extra Apple Pie Larabar in her car (I got her hooked), so I had that to tide me over a bit longer.

CIMG3097

Later that night, I met up with all 6 (7 including moi!) of my best friends from high school, which was awesome because we can rarely ever get anybody all together!  This meant however, that I did eat out again (oops!) and spend money I maybe didn’t need to, but it was totally worth it to see everybody.  We headed out to Billy’s Bar & Grill in St. Paul, where we started with a little Spinach Artichoke Dip with pita triangles. Ash and I split a veggie pizza (artichokes, mushrooms & green peppers – I had 3 slices), and I had a small side salad with balsamic vinaigrette.  All washed down with a nice Leinie’s Honeyweiss of course!

Whew – FUN TIMES!  This morning, needless to say, I was sooo excited to sleep-in.  Which I did…until 9am (uber-late for me and my morning body schedule)!  Then I got up and had fun examining all the fun goodies from Trader Joe’s I got yesterday…here are the 5 new items I purchased…

Righteous Rounds Chocolate Chip Cookies (RAW + made with vegetable/fruit extracts)
Thai Yellow Curry Sauce
Biryani Rice 90 Second Pack
Peanut Butter Cookie Larabar
Raisin Pecan Artisan Bread Loaf

CIMG3108

Doesn’t that loaf look dee-lish?  Well, it was even better this morning as…..FRENCH TOAST!  Dipped in the usual combo (Eggbeaters, skim milk, vanilla & cinnamon) and topped with almond butter (I restocked!), a drizzle of maple syrup and raspberries.  Did I mention french toast is one of my favorite foods?

CIMG3110CIMG3111

Later, me and my family (who were in town for the festivities) went over to see my sister’s new house!  It was super cute!  After, we decided to grab a little lunch before the fam had to hit the road back to Wisconsin.  My little sister requested Bruegger’s Bagels – it’s her fave, and she can’t get it in WI!  For me, I was feeling a salad, so I had a make-you-own-salad mix featuring….mixed greens, cucumbers, sprouts, red onion, blue cheese, cranberries, almonds and balsamic vinaigrette.  It hit the spot (along with few sips of mom’s Diet Coke!).

CIMG3114CIMG3112

Now I am blogging and chomping on my new TJ’s chocolate chip cookies.  Although the calorie count/raw/semi-nutritious thing coerced me into buying them, I don’t know if I would again.  They are too crunchy for me (I like mine chewy and soft!) and taste kinda funny.  They will still definitely be eaten up though :).  The tea on the other hand?  Chai-tastic!

The day beckons me away…the sun is shining and this girl is going to go get some things done, including a leisurely walk outside.  I have a new recipe concocted for dinner and am looking forward to some much needed yoga tonight to stretch out my fatigued muscles from yesterday.  Should be a fabulous Sunday…hope yours is too!

What’s your favorite thing to do on Sundays?

Whew…another long day has come and gone!  Good thing I started out with a hearty bowl of KERF-style oats to keep me going all morning.  Today’s mix contained:

1/3 cup rolled oats
1 tbsp. oat bran
water
1 sliced banana
2 tbsp. unsweetened shredded coconut
5 Go Raw “Pumpkin Super Chips” crumbled
drizzle of honey
1 heaping tbsp. TJ’s almond butter

cimg2715

Along with a nice cuppa joe with skim milk (not pictured), this held me over quite well until I took an early lunch around 11am.  Although it is going to look very similar to the past couple days, I swear it’s the last day for Garbanzo Guac sandwiches for awhile!  Paired with a couple organic carrots (soooo much better than baby carrots!) and some True North almond crunchy bites (from my lunchtime run to Tarjay!) for dessert, it was uber-delish!

cimg2720

cimg2723

cimg2726

(Serving size alert!  Read those labels – 5 of these little suckers are 170 calories!  Thank goodness they are all natural and taste good, otherwise we would have a problem on our hands!)

For some reason, I was just not satisfied all day.  Something was missing.  So I ate my snack hoping that would do the trick.  Today, a Cashew Cookie Larabar (good, but definitely not my fave) with a crunchy Braeburn apple.

cimg2728

Like I said, for some reason, I just wasn’t satisfied.  Since I knew I was going to be going on a 6-mile run with one of my favorite people in the world right after work, I munched on some pretzels and a Diet Cherry Coke before I left work to meet Charlotte.  I broke down!  I HAD to have the DCC!

cimg2729

This definitely hit the pre-run spot!  After work, I ventured to meet Charlotte to go running.  Even though it was drizzling out, we braved the rain for an AWESOME run around St. Paul.  It was so refreshing – I swear!  We came home to her 85-lb. lapdog Otto (yes, 85 lb.), ordered delivery and watched America’s Next Top Model (go Celia!) and LOST (I love you Jack!).

We ordered from Pizza Luce (a yummy vegan-friendly pizza eatery): spinach salad with cranberries, feta and pecans as well as veggie pizza.  We split the salad, then I had about 4 small slices of the pizza.   Charlotte and I decided it was practically the perfect night – run, food and some good TV!  Unfortunately, I don’t have a beauty shot of the eats because we were so starving after the 6 miles, we downed that food like no one’s business.

Have a good night, and see you all tomorrow!
