Welcome ladies and gents, children and babies, friends and families to the home of cheese – WISCONSIN (pronounced Wiss-cahhhhn-sin if you are from the Midwest)!  I thought y’all might like a little pic of where yours truly roamed her college days as well as current days.  

FYI: The State Capitol’s dome is one of the largest in the world.  Ya heard it here.

 

Flashback to last night…

Believe it or not, I got EVERYTHING done on my to-do list, with a few modifications of course.  I scrapped the Mint thang because online budgeting was too dang confusing.  Instead, I relied on my old friend Excel to whip up a nice lil’ spreadsheet.  Second, I found no plug-in converter at Target and forgot the oven cleaner.  However, I did pick up some cooking spray, butter, a dress and the new Shape magazine.  Damn you Tarjay!

POM Pomegranate Hibiscus Green Tea

The lovely peeps at POM (shoutout to you Molly!) sent me some of their POMx tea to try.  It’s got a new name, new flavors and is light!  It’s real brewed tea with 100% POM juice and other natural flavas.  I’ve also got Pomegranate Lychee Green Tea + Pomegranate Wildberry White to try!

After reading the label (always a must!), I have one small frustration: fructose + erythritol-sweetened.  Although these claim to be “natural,” we all know the truth from the Vitamin Water 10 shenanigans of yore.

 

This mornin’…

With 15 miles on the brain, I set my alarm for 7am.  That way I could eat, wait an hour then venture out around 8am to get the torture party started.  Unfortunately, the allergies + cold that has been brewing all week reared its head when my alarm went off.  Hence, hit the snooze and slept for another hour.  

I woke-up at 8am, still not feeling the greatest (think sinus headache, sore throat + phlegm), but I downed a plain white bagel with a bit o’ buttah and read some bloggies while I let the food settle.  Then I geared up and headed out!

 

Distance: 15.04 miles (according to MapMyRun)

Time: 2:50

Average pace: 10:00/mile

 

No, I don’t have a Garmin – these are estimates done the old-fashioned way!  If you are a math whiz, you will see 10:00/mile for 15 miles does not equal that time.  However, I am taking into consideration a crapload of stoplights I had to wait for, two Clif Shot Blok + water breaks (2-4 minutes each) and MapMyRun error.

Overall, the run felt pretty good.  I definitely felt sinusy (is that a word?), so I just kept it nice, steady and slow.  The weather was fabulous (60 degrees when I left the house – PERFECT) and since I did it alone with no music or friends running with me, I was very happy.

Happier to devour this when I got home though…

By the time I got home, talked to the ‘rents, showered, ate + grabbed a Cafe Au Lait (1/2 skim milk + 1/2 coffee), I missed most of the Madtown Farmer’s Market :(.  However, I did score 1 bunch of leeks + 1 bunch of beets for $2 from a stand just closing up.

Then it was time to visit a Madison landmark…Ian’s Pizza!

You have no idea how many pieces of this has been consumed by yours truly at about 2:15am on a Saturday night (slash Sunday morning) back in the college days.

I arrived back at la casa de Holly, having shopped around for about 4 miles.  So yes, my legs hate me right now. Hence why I am going to finish chomping my Banana Nut Cheerios + sunflower seeds and finish dranking my green tea + Emergen-C packet to kick this allergy cold and make some dindin.  Gots lots of fruits and veggies to make up for!

Running Well, Wedding Bells + Internet Hell August 16, 2009

Yep, that pretty much sums up my weekend.

Let’s start with the good stuff – I got up at 7am bright n’ early on Saturday morning and ate a nice carb-heavy pre-run meal consisting of a 1/2 cup Special K with 1/2 cup skim milk and a chocolate chip granola bar.  There is no better running fuel than pure white carbs.

Then, yours truly did what she has NEVER done before – run 16 miles!

The first 9 miles went well despite the Minnesota heat and humidity.  I made sure to make frequent water stops (also stopping to splash water on my head to cool down) before returning back to my friend Ashley’s where I popped 3 Clif Black Cherry Shot Bloks and some Diet Cherry Pepsi (don’t judge).  Then Ashley headed out with me to finish the last 7 miles, and my other friend Megan joined us for the last 3 miles.  My friends are seriously the best :).

In the end? The run went AWESOME.  I finished in my marathon pace of just under 10:00 minutes/mile, equaling about 2 hours and 40 minutes.  I seriously think I could have gone even further. It was that kind of glorious running day.

Seriously…if I could marry Indian food I would.  Shhhhh, don’t tell McMac I am cheating on him ;).

After lunchie, it was off to IKEA –  ummm, holy anxiety!  Soooo many people, soooo many things to look at and tooooo little time.  Luckily, I had my trusted Meggy Moo in tow.  If this isn’t a friend, I don’t know what is:

Then, I gussied myself up and headed off to my girl Charlotte’s wedding!  Charlotte and I studied abroad together in college in London, and we’ve pretty much been soulmates ever since.  LOVE that girl.  I also got to see Brittany (who also studied abroad with us) for the first time in years.  LOVE that girl too.

Yeah, that’s right.  My girl Char had a plethora of CHEESECAKES at her wedding instead of regular ol’ wedding cake.  That is reason #4,276 that we are friends.  Brittho and I may have split an additional piece of Key Lime Cheesecake.  Just sayin…

When I got home, I crashed harder than Lindsey Lohan’s career.

After almost 10 hours of glorious sleep, I woke up to coffee and a lovely chat with Ashley.  Then, right as I started contemplating eating Ash’s carpet, it was 10:30am and time for me to meet another fabulous lady you all know – Ms. Angharad!

We met at the Uptown Diner…looks like a total dive from the outside, but inside you will find such fabulous delicacies such as this…

After brekkie, I skedaddled back on the road (wasn’t I just driving?) back to Madison.  Five LONG hours later, I arrived safely.  After successful shopping trip #2 at the co-op (including a free coupon for a French Meadow bread product and a bottle of organic agave syrup – score!), I made it back to my apartment to find the Internet still not working.

WTF?!?!?!?!

I can’t handle this.  ATT is apparently coming on Tuesday to fix it, but that means another two days of paying for coffee at the cute coffeeshop for free Wi-Fi.  I guess there could be worse thangs…

I just scrolled through the post and realized it’s practically a marathon long, which by the way, the Twin Cities Marathon is in T-minus 49 days.  Eeeeeeek!

Oy vay…what a weekend!

After 3 hours of driving through Wisconsin country, I made it to the ‘rents house!  Tomorrow morn, I have an interview in Madison, which is much closer to Barbie + Ken’s house than MN.  Instead of a 4 hour drive, I will only have a 2 hour drive to get to Madtown for my 10am interview.  Whoop!

Alrighty, where did I leave off?  I believe you all got a recap of the wedding fun to be had in Part One, so I shall begin this morning upon my awaking.  Pretty tired from the 13 miles + night o’ dancing, I woke up at 8:30am to let out the beast one last time.  Then I opened the fridge and had a bit of this…

After eating, I met up with two of my bestest friends in the world for perhaps the most perfect morning ever.  We grabbed coffee (and some extra sustenance for me) at a fabulous local coffeehouse called Spyhouse Coffee and headed off for a GLORIOUS morning walk around the lake.  Instead of a mom walk, it was a friend walk :).

After gabbing and walking about 5.5 miles (we went around twice – we had LOTS of catching up to do), we finally parted ways.  I headed straight to one of my greatest weaknesses in the world: Whole Foods!

After lunchie, I organized and packed all my stuff up at my cousin’s apartment, blogged Part One of the weekend and said my goodbye to Angus the Beast with a big ol’ kiss.  Who am I kidding? There was no kiss.  Dogs are growing on me after my childhood attack by my neighbor’s show poodles, but I am not making that much dog progress.  I threw Angus an extra treat instead :).

Then, I purtied myself up and headed off to my friend’s wedding shower.  I’ve known Miss Lisa Soon-To-Be Smith since 3rd grade…we go wayyyyyy back peeps.

It’s been such a busy last couple weeks (and an obv busy day planned tomorrow!), I’ve decided to make some mini-goals for the week to try and re-prioritize to make some time for me to decompress and RELAX!

  • YOGA! I haven’t been to a real class or done a real yoga sequence (minus some stretches here and there) in more than two weeks.  Honestly, I can feel a real difference in my body, and I am dedicating myself to doing two 1-hr. yoga seshes this week!
  • Block out time on the planner – this upcoming weekend is the first weekend in almost two months that I haven’t had anything planned (minus another bloggy meet-up with Angharad, which totally counts as decompressing – in the form of food of course). So, my goal is to keep it that way!  An open weekend here I come – please yell at me if I try to plan anything!

What are your mini-goals for the week? If you don’t have any (which I normally don’t), think of two things you would like to get accomplished this week, and we’ll all make it happen together.  Holllllaaaaa!

Mondo-Filled Fun, Part 1 June 21, 2009

Dudes…it has seriously been such a jam-packed weekend, this has been the first time I’ve been on a computer since I left work on Friday!  I think that is a record for yours truly.  So, yes, today is Sunday, but we’ve got to rewind it all the way back to Friday (if only this worked in real life :)) to start at the beginning…

Breakfast was eaten on the run on Friday morning, partially because it was portable but mostly because it was Friday, and Friday’s I usually am running late (procrastinating my alarm clock is in full force).  I grabbed 4 Sunsweet individually-wrapped prunes along with toasted Ezekiel bread with PB

Unfortunately, Friday was a bit of a “bar-day” because I was runnin’ low on goodies.  I don’t like to rely on too many bars (instead of eating real food…what up to Kath!) but today was one of those days it was just quite unavoidable.  For snack, I had a Kids Clif ZBar in Blueberry….delicious!

Lunch was a bit different today – I had my usual afternoon yogurt combo for a midday meal (again, running low on food).  It was Strawberry Chobani, TJ’s Blueberry Muesli & lotsa berry goodness.  Unfortunately, this was my last of the Chobani samples :(.  After trying all the flavors, I would definitely say the Blueberry was my fave and would totally recommend Chobani Greek yogurt to y’all.  It’s flavorful, delicious, natural and yummy!

Bad news:  it was NOT good.  I can’t quite put my finger on exactly what it was, but the whole combo of flavors did not work.  It was grassy (not good grassy) and had a really weird flavor to it.  This is honestly the first thing I’ve tried in awhile that I really just did not care for (and I’m one of the least picky eaters I know!).  As much as I didn’t care for it, I did eat the rest of it because, (a) I paid almost 2$ for it, (b) it was the only thing I had at work to eat (besides a break room full of cupcakes – eek!) and (c) I washed it down with this…

On my way home from work, I put on the Hairspray musical soundtrack on full blast and rocked out on a fabulous Friday afternoon (fortunately for you, there is no picture of this).  “You can’t stop the motion of the ocean…”

Then I hit up Tarjay for a quick run and came out with 2 new goodies!

After dinner, I whipped up another batch of VeggieGirl blondies with a special mission in mind…Father’s Day on Sunday!  I couldn’t resist making up another pan of delicious blondieness, so I thought hmmmm….what would Daddy Everythingtarian’s dream blondie combo be?

My dad’s two favorite things in the world are Crunch Bars & almonds…so I thought, why not mix the two together?  I made the same substitutions as the first batch (vanilla Greek yogurt for soy yogurt; half whole wheat, half white flour for gluten-free and then threw in 3 chopped up Crunch bars and 1 cup slivered almonds).  They were the sh!t – just putting it out there…more props to VeggieGirl!

After blondie making, Megan and I hit up the mall for a little shopping where she scored some awesome deals (nothing for this poor gal), then I came home and headed to bed, knowing there was a 6 mile run in my future at 6am the next morning.

 

SATURDAY

My alarm went off at 6am (as planned), and I dragged my buns out of bed at about 6:15am, which is actually really good for me.  I grabbed a quick 1/2 banana to eat, then dragged myself bounded out the door to run by 6:30am.  The run was fine – I definitely didn’t feel my best but ended up running it in about 1 hour.  As soon as I got home…I dug into this concoction:

Taking a tip from Heather…I used my almost-empty peanut butter jar to house my morning oats!

1/2 banana
1/2 cup blueberries
3 True North Citrus Burst clusters, crumbled

The mix was delish!  The peanut clusters have dried cranberries + orange peel, so they are a bright, fresh burst of flavor!  I really like them – adding them to the oatmeal was the perfect touch!  I showered quickly, grabbed a small ‘Bou coffee on the run and headed to the Special Olympics Summer Games!!!

My job all day was to hang out at the DJ booth aka “Boogie Town” and dance/mingle/have fun with the athletes all day, awesome, right?  It was seriously such a fun, rewarding, sweaty, dancy good time!

Saturday was just so much fun, so enjoyable and so uplifting!  The Special Olympics is such an awesome organization (very well-run too, may I add!) and really is so supportive of those with intellectual disabilities.  There couldn’t have been a better way to spend Saturday – especially with a free lunch included :).

Cheese + mustard sammie, applesauce, Raw Organic Cinnamon Raisin bar (mine from home) and a Berry Gatorade – a nice lil’ refuel to keep dancing the afternoon away!

Randomness June 1, 2009

As the week progresses, the eats are going to get more and more random as I use up the refridgerator and pantry.  Don’t say I didn’t warn ya…:)

Breakfast was extra yummy this morning, thanks to the addition of a lil’ bit o’ dark chocolate.  Really, if you start your day with dark chocolate, the day seems so much brighter!

1/3 cup rolled oats + 1 tbsp. oat bran
water
1/2 banana
2 tbsp. unsweetened coconut shreds
1-2 tsp. grated dark chocolate
1 heaping tbsp. raw almond butter

The bowl held me over fabulous until lunch, when I had some of last night’s leftover garlic & olive oil pasta with sundried tomatoes and spinach.  It was just as good reheated.  Here comes the random part: I ate that with a banana with almond butter, hehe :).  What a combo, right?

Okay, so I realize the banana looks well, slightly “wrong.”  So for now, just ignore that :).  One trick that I use to transport peanut/almond/nut butters is to put them in baggies.  Then, when I am ready to chow down, I cut the tip of the baggie (similar to like a frosting bag) and then I can squeeze it out cleanly without all the mess.  Try it, it’s totally saved me some messiness throughout the years!

After lunch, I headed off on the daily 1/2 hour walk.  Although it was slightly cooler today, it was so nice to breathe in some fresh air and get away from the monotonous computer screen.  Mid-afternoon, I had the old standby snack: 1/2 cup plain nonfat yogurt, 1/2 cup blueberries and a Nature Valley honey + oats granola bar.  The addition of the granola bar was peerrrfffeecct – it made it all taste like blueberry crisp.  Yum!

After work, I grabbed a handful of pretzels then bounded out the door for a 5 mile run!

After running, I walked an additional mile to cool down.  For some reason, I was feeling a little off after the run.  I immediately made dinner when I got home, hoping that might help make me feel a bit better.  Welcome back monster sandwich!

I knew the sandwich alone wasn’t going to fill me up, but my pantry was looking pretty bare.  So, instead of a breakfast cookie a la Fitnessista, I made a dinner cookie-type thing :).

1 heaping tbsp. shredded unsweetened coconut
1/2 tbsp. raw almond butter
a bit of grated dark chocolate
splash of oat milk

I told you I was getting random!  I was going to smoosh it down into a cookie but then decided to eat it out of the bowl with a spoon :).  Now, I am sipping on some Good Earth Sweet & Spicy tea, watching The Bachelorette (Jillian has the cutest clothes!) and finishing up some bloggy-related things.

I love those Sundays when you have nothing to do and can do anything you want!  They don’t come often, so I try to take advantage of them.  Today after breakfast, I met up with a hilarious friend for some coffee/hot chocolate (coffee with 2% milk for me, hot chocolate for him :)).  He seriously puts me in such a good mood – he’s that dang funny.

An hour and a half later, I got back and felt like running.  I genuinely wanted to go running, and the fact that it was like 80 degrees, sunny and gorgeous out didn’t hurt either.  Tackling a nice 6 mile loop, I ran the first 5 miles then walked the last mile, enjoying the smell of yummy lilacs and basking in the sun (with a lil’ SPF protection of course!).  When I got home, I wasn’t super hungry and just made up a small snack plate to munch on while I stretched.

After running, I showered up and ran some errands to the usual, gas + Target.  Then I came home, cleaned up a bit, got some shtuff done on the computer and put away my laundry.  I know, a party, right?  Late afternoon, I concocted Green Monster #3 aka The Winning Recipe!  Yep, it’s official: I’m addicted.

1 cup Oat Dream oat milk
1 banana
1 cup frozen tropical fruit blend (pineapple, mango, banana)
1 large handful (2 cups) spinach
1 handful ice cubes

Since I was quickly running out of things to do (LOVE when that happens!), I took another walk.  It was probably about 1.5 or 2 miles, but when the weather is soooo nice out, I can’t be inside.  Blame my mom for ALWAYS telling me as a kid, “It’s too nice out to be inside!”  My guilt continues today.

For dindin, I concocted a super easy pasta dish to use up some ingredients I had in the kitchen.  It was penne pasta with olive oil, garlic, sundried tomatoes and spinach.  Simple and delicious.

After dinner, I decided to head over to my favorite Sunday yoga class with Deb.  Today I definitely got my fill (plus some!) of exercise, but if you can’t tell, I have a slight problem being bored and really can’t stand it, haha!  Since I had nothing left to do (and TV really has crap on these days), I headed to center my chi and stretch my body.  My mind was extra monkey-like today, and I didn’t focus too well, but by the end I was feeling better.  Maybe that was because I had this on the mind…

Got home from yoga/pilates combo class and had 1/2 naner with some almond butter, especially with a nice cup of mint tea!

Now I am off to shower, crawl in bed and conk out – tomorrow is already Monday!  Hope you all had a good weekend!  See you bright and early tomorrow for a return installment of Holly Investigates… (cue dramatic music).

The title of this post completely tells it all.  It is one WINNNDYY day here in Minnesota!

Besides announcing my very FIRST giveaway, the day started out like any other.  Since I’m heading to Madison this weekend, I’m trying to use up all the things I have in my pantry.  This is why today’s breakfast might look eerily similar to yesterday’s…

Mid-morning, it was the last of these kiddos (this one I found on sale at Kowalski’s for $0.88!)…

Work was work as usual…at nooner I broke for lunch.  Along with a steamed sweet potato (fork holes all around it and nuke it for 5 minutes) and grape tomatoes, I devoured a yummy Avocado-Chickpea Mash sandwich.  It was 1 small avocado mashed with 1/2 cup chickpeas, plus salt + pepper.  Lunch today however, was enjoyed on the floor by the front desk.  The lunch room was getting crowded, and quite frankly, I enjoy my peace & quiet lunches.  So I ate next to lovely Laurie, who graciously offered to take my picture and let me sit by her…

After lunch, I went on a windy, windy walk!  I believe the skirt I was wearing even flew up a couple times (I hope nobody got a peek!).  After 30 minutes, I feel like I even got a mini-workout because fighting the wind totally felt like resistance training!  When I got back, I had a cup of Good Earth Sweet & Spicy tea with some of my TJ’s raw, vegetable-laden Righteous Rounds chocolate chip cookies.

The rest of the day flew by fast, and I got to leave early!  I had a doctor’s appointment so I skedaddled out of work at 3:30pm to take care of business.  Unfortunately, I did not pack an afternoon snack, and it totally bit me in the butt later.  By the time I got home at 5pm, I was starving and dug into this while my pasta was boiling…

I started dipping the TJ’s cookies in the almond butter, then in shredded coconut!  Gosh, it was heavenly!  However, I did feel slightly out of control while doing this.  Between not having eaten, having it be around that time of the month and 1/2 marathon training, I definitely overdid it by eating almost 10 cookies like this.

On top of that, I also scarfed down dinner, which was leftover Italian pasta sauce from last week over Barilla Plus penne pasta, sprinkled with some goat cheese.

Even worse, after dinner, I said what the hell and finished the last of the cookies (about 5).  I’m not going to lie, the end of the day today was not my best eating day.  But it happened, and I am sure it will happen again.  I’ve spent many hours over the past couple years beating myself over doing something like this – binging and feeling out of control.  We’ve all been there.  Right now, I feel lethargic, gross and just all over icky.  Quite frankly, it’s a great reminder of why I do eat healthy (most of the time :)).  Eating healthy makes you feel good, energetic and happy!

Right now, I am sipping on some mint tea to settle my stomach, going to head off for a short walk (walking after binging is shown to actually help reduce the side effects!) and then it’s beach volleyball league tonight.  There is so much more to live for than food. 

So here I am, brushing it off and remembering…tomorrow is always a new day.

***Update:  Since honesty is the best policy, I also had some DQ ice cream (courtesy of Megan) after dinner…a free Peanut Buster Parfait?  I could not resist.  I ate about 1/2 – 3/4 then threw the rest away – I was full and not feeling so hot.  Luckily, last night’s beach volleyball game was a good one.  Hopefully I burned off some of those cals from today!
