18 Miles Later… August 30, 2009

CIMG4847

...this is what I looked like.

It ain’t pretty, but it’s real.

18.15 miles.  2 hours 55 minutes. 9:30 minutes/mile.  Booyah.

A high protein, carbful post-run snack made me look feel slightly better…

CIMG4845

Janetha C.C. Ranch Mix, beets + farmer's market plums

Actually, if I am going to be honest with y’all, the run was awesome.  Long, but awesome.  Honestly.  I think since I work out best in the afternoon; going to the farmer’s market in the morning, eating breakfast and then heading out at 1:30pm was like the miracle formula.  The 6 Cran-Razz Clif Shot Bloks I took throughout the run probably helped too.

(P.S. I LOVE how everyone thought the banana was an ice cream cone…ice cream in the mornin’? Heck yah.)

snacks at the grocery store (which were BOTH free - all hail coupon cutting!)

snacks at the grocery store (which were BOTH free - all hail coupon cutting!)

After the run, I tried to eat intuitively; not shove down massive calories because I could (which, don’t get me wrong, was reallllyyyy tempting…).  And it worked!  I would eat, usually feel full for an hour or two then was massively hungry again. Vroom, vroom metabolism!

For dindin, I whipped up a lil’ somethang with my farmer’s market finds

bed of mixed greens
zucchini + roma tomato (sauteed in EVOO + garlic)
lemon basil
lotsa parmigiano reggiano goodness
a side of 7-grain Kashi crackers

CIMG4854

grilled veggie salad with Kashis

Plus, a post-dinner handful of Kashis.  Those things are ridiculously good.

And a dessert a la this girl and that girl

85% dark choc + AB

85% dark choc + AB

Then, being the wild n’ crazy grandma I am, I met up with my fabulous friend Brett for dranks (two Spotted Cow beers to be exact) then went dancing (and played wingwoman for him) at the local gay bar.  I<3 gay men.  Ummm…best. time. in a long time.  If you say dancing after running 18 miles, I am still there.  Good times were had, and I was in bed by 1am.  Perf.

This morning, I had breakfast in bed…

1 cup Stonyfield BaNilla yog
sprinkle o’ flax
sprinkle o’ almond meal
1/2 cup raspberries
1/4 cup Optimum Blueberry Cinnamon cereal

CIMG4860

refreshing + delicious

Now I am sitting at a local coffeeshop, swiggin’ my cuppa joe and enjoying the gorgey day.  Happy Sunday 🙂

Are you a coupon cutter? I never used to be, but now I love it!!!

Alright kids, hold onto your britches because we got a big one coming your way! Since there has been no “This and That” post this week, I am going to weave it into today’s.  So please, follow along (if you can).

First and foremost, I need to thank y’all for your “get out of a funk” suggestions yesterday.  Even though I’m not feeling completely out of the hunches yet, I just got back from a 3 mile run + yoga and am feeling lots better. Amazing what a lil’ endorphin rush can do, no?

Brekkie went unphotographed because I was inhaling my Barbara’s Vanilla Almond Shredded Oatmeal + skim milk plus a naner + AB as I was walking out the door.  Funny thing is, I wasn’t late for work.

Listen up peeps, this is how we do,
Delish dot com has some sammie ideas too.
I know y’all need some inspiration,
so pack up your lunch boxes for a meal celebration!

I was def a lil’ funkalicious throughout the day today, including splaying myself on the floor in our office.  Suddenly, our co-worker came barging in with a metal jousting helmet on and scared the bejeezus out of all of us.  Yes, a guy that works down the hall is a legit medieval times jouster.  No lie.

Lunchie was leftovers from last night’s Veggie Thai Red Curry

CIMG4806

mmmm, mmmm good!

and some bluebs just for good measure

and some bluebs just for good measure

Miss Special K only treats us kind,
encouraging us to share yourself and mind.
Head on over to swap some goodies,
and share the love with all your fellow foodies!

After the red curry, I think the spiciness upset my tum-tum a bit so I dug into my snack a bit early…

CIMG4808

Chocolate Brownie PURE Bar (smaller than a business card - fo reals)

I know, I really need to get over the size of these bars.  However, the flavor? AMAZING.

My snacky lil’ girl with the fabulous face,
is VegTastic and leaving her fave place.
She giving away some uber-awesome schtuff,
so head on over because Kailey’s off the cuff!

Later in the afternoon, I let my funk get the best of me, and I dived (or dove?) into a handful of these…

CIMG4809

Milk Duds...my fave candy eva.

A handful of Raisinets might have also entered my mouth. And I’ve been reminded, some sour watermelon slices.

My new fave blog has the biggest prize,
Jessie’s got a Vita-Mix – ain’t no lie.
Enter now for this magic machine,
smoothies, sauces and goods – you will gleen!

After gorging myself on sugar and on the verge of a fructose coma, I finished up the day and walked my buns home. Then I threw on my running gear, ran 1.5 miles to the gym, sweated out with a 75 minute yoga sesh (FULL of downward dogs + chaturangas = sore arms) and ran 1 mile home.

Then I devoured the most delicious bowl of yog eva!

CIMG4813

Plain Chobani, mushed naner, buttloads of cinnamon, Vanilla Almond squares + raw AB

After dindin, I had a phone date with our fave Brit Angharad and now I gots to shower, clean this place up and hit the hay.

My bloggy changes are comin’ soon,
so don’t go leaving to rocket to the moon.
I promise the same stuff with a bit o’ sass,
peace out and much love from this g-ma lass!

Whoooooooo whooooooooo!

Close-Ups August 23, 2009

Dudes…Sunday night, again?  Suriously.

Well, let’s see in the last 24 hours, I’ve really been diggin’ the extremo close-up food shots (hence post title).  When I left y’all last night, I was just about to make this fabulous dinner…

1 handful mixed greens
2 leeks, 1/4 green pep, 1/4 onion + 2 kale leaves
(sauteed in EVOO, balsamic + garlic)
1/2 grilled zucchini
1 tbsp. sunflower seeds
drizzle of balsamic vinegar

grilled veggie salad

grilled balsamic veggie salad

Do grill marks make anyone else happy? And, is anyone else’s salad not complete without sunflower seeds?

Topped off with this showstopper…

CIMG4762

AB frosting atop a German Chocolate Lara (which tastes A LOT like the Chocolate Coconut one)

Lara has a tendency to steal the spotlight.

After dindin, I fell asleep from 7:30 to 11:30pm  got on my clubbin’ gear (fishnets + flourescent pink butt dress) and booty-danced the night away until 2am.

Yeah, that’s right.  Between the 15 mile run + allergies, I was toast.  I slept for 4 hours, woke up at 11:30pm to find 1 missed call + 2 text messages (this never happens), watched 4 episodes of Arrested Development free on MSN and ate a bowl of PB Puffins + skim milk before calling it a night for the 2nd time.

At 8am this morning, I woke up refreshed and ready to dive in for a classic bowl of oats…

1/2 cup oats
1 cup water
1 mashed naner
buttloads of cinnamon
hunk(s) o’ almond buttah

CIMG4765

day 4 of Sarah's breakfast challenge? check.

I devoured this baby alongside another large mug of green tea + Emergen-C packet.  Allergies…you will NOT win!

Then I walked to a 9:30am 75-minute Go With the Flow Yoga class.  Holy standing splits.  It was just was just what my muscles, brain and body needed.  I need to get back on the yoga train…it always feels soooo good! (TWSS?)

I munched on a Blueberry PURE Bar + POMx Wildberry White Tea when I got home.  Many of you have asked how I liked both products.  I LIKE both, but I have two mayjuh issues: (1) PURE bars = small – sometimes I need a bit o’ quantity.  (2) I mentioned this in the last post, the tea is erythritol + fructose sweetened – read to find out what that’s all about.

Then I went to 3 (yes, 3) grocery stores to stock up on the goods…

First stop, Trader Joe’s.  Key purchases include:

  • TJ’s raw almond butter
  • Thai Red Curry sauce
  • 3-grain tempeh
  • almond meal

Next stop on the train…Whole Foods!

  • expeller-pressed canola oil
  • 5 for $5.00 Chobani Greek yogurt (that’s highway robbery!)
  • lunchtime sushi
CIMG4768

my fave tuna avocado brown rice roll

Last stop, I walked to my local co-op where I purchased ALL locally-grown, organic produce (minus the avocados + bananas).

  • mixed greens
  • zucchini
  • kohlrabi
  • cucumber
  • organic skim milk

Damn Gina, I spent too much money!  However, a lot of stuff was stock-up thangs (I purchased more than outlined above) that I will eventually need.  End of story.

When I got home, I grabbed a Runner’s World mag my mom gave me and a Whole Foods mag to snuggle in my bed and read while I ate this:

Chobani plain Greek yog + PB Puffins + 1 mashed naner

Chobani plain Greek yog + PB Puffins + 1 mashed naner

Then I took an hour long nap.  You know I am sick if I take a nap.  I NEVER take naps.

Sometimes I consider myself more of a “slapdash cook” – one who throws random ingredients together hoping it will turn out because they don’t really know real technique.  Then there are days I just surprise myself by creating things like Coconut-Crusted Tempeh Island Salad.

CIMG4770

stellar.

CIMG4772

more stellarness.

Enough of the food close-ups, I’m ready for MY close-up Mr. DeMille…

Shady’s Holly’s back, tell a friend…

…and SOOO happy to be back!  I missed y’all :).

First and foremost, thank you to Janetha, Alison, Matt, Angharad and Katharina for sitting in the hosting chair as the acting Healthy Everythingtarian this week and writing a wonderful variety of guest posts.  I loved each and every one of them (which ALL got rave reviews from my co-workers!) – THANK YOU!

I also have to thank YOU all – I also got some lovely feedback from the guest posters saying how wonderful Healthy Everythingtarian readers are, and for that, my homedudes, you WILL be rewarded (hint: scroll down to the end of this post).

Good news…I am not homeless in Madison!  Woowoo for that!  When you read this, I am actually probably currently moving into my new digs.  I actually haven’t seen the apartment (one of the downsides of moving from another state…eek!) but a friend looked at it for me and gave it the go-ahead, so I am crossing my fingers it’s no drug house or anything.  I guess we’ll see…

This week away from the blogosphere was full of totally awesome firsts…

You’re probably thinking, ummm blogger award? In addition, an exciting announcement should also be made by the end of the week for y’all!  Stay tuned to find out exactly what that upcoming news entails.  Gosh, I’m so mysterious…muah ha ha!

So, get ready to back on normal schedule including some “This and That” love and a looonnnngggg overdue “Holly Investigates” post.  Now that I am finally settling in, the bloggy goodness is going to skyrocket with awesomeness.  Does that even make sense?  Ahhhh…whatev – enjoy the weekend everyone!

2009 Gas Station Challenge July 29, 2009

This morn was rough.  Real rough.

You ever have those mornings where you look in the mirror and are like, whoa – what the hell beat me up last night?  I’m all about self-empowerment and encouragement peeps, but sometimes, there is no saving face (literally) no matter how many compliments you give yourself.

Luckily, washing my face always seems to make things 100% better, so I lathered up real nice, slathered on my fave Aveeno face lotion and felt a whole lot better.  I was still 1/2 hour later to work than norm, but it was worth it to take time and enjoy this…

Zoe's Cinnamon Raisin Granola, skim milk + banana

Zoe's Cinnamon Raisin Granola, skim milk + banana

I finally busted open my last box of Zoe’s granola sent to me awhile ago as a free sample: Cinnamon Raisin! As with all Zoe’s granolas, my first reaction was mmmmmmmmm! Honestly, I wasn’t the hugest fan of their bars, but their granolas are really good. I love the sweetness, crunch and texture of the mix, and the Cinnamon Raisin was no different.

Finally, lunchtime struck and it was time for the challenge: The Gas Station Challenge!

the scene of the challenge

the scene of the challenge

Since the next week and a half is going to be a bit crazy, I don’t know if it will be worth it for me to grocery shop because I am grabbing lunch with friends, have a couple events to go to and obv going to be uber busssyyyy.  So, I decided today I would give myself $10.00 to buy myself lunch, snacks and dinner for the day.  You may be asking me, $10 bucks at a gas station, are you kay-ray-zee woman?

Most likely.

However, all of us are busy and quite frankly, don’t always have time to prepare lovely, gorge homemade meals featuring organic, homegrown ingredients all the time (or even half the time!).  Sometimes, dinner is chowed down while driving, talking on the phone and trying to navigate the mean highways of MN…I mean…

I wanted to see how far $10 would go at the gas station and see how I could navigate our fave neighborhood hot spot for some healthy eats.  Here’s how it went…

CIMG4480

the loot = $10.20

  • Bumblebee Sundried Tomato & Basil Tuna with Crackers
  • Crystal Farms Marble Jack cheese stick
  • Crunchy Peanut Butter Clif Bar
  • Veggie platter with dill dip
  • 1 (6-oz.) container Kemps 1% fat cottage cheese
  • Green apple
  • Dark Chocolate Peanut M&Ms

Two meals and a snack for $10.20…if I do say so myself, I rocked that challenge!

Lunch: Tuna cracker pack + cottage cheese + veggie tray.  One can get quite creative with this combo, if I do say so myself…

Snack: Dark chocolate peanut M&Ms

Mini-dinner #1: Clif bar + cheese stick + apple

Volleyball was a bit bittersweet.  We lost.  Bad.  However, in brighter news, next Wednesday is now my going away shindig (instead of a playoff v-ball game).  I’ll take that trade-off.

Mini-dinner #2: Red pepper hummus + pita chips (split three ways…although I prob could have wolfed em’ all down)

post-game cheering up

post-game cheering up

Now, it’s time to make my master moving to-do list and get to bed.  I haven’t worked out since Sunday (eeek…there is marathon training to be had!) and haven’t gotten to bed before 11pm in a week!  That just ain’t okay with my healthified g-ma ways :).

What is your fave gas station find?  Dudes, that sundried tomato tuna cracker pack was pretty delish!

It’s a Matter of Equations July 22, 2009

For the record, yours truly has always been a writing and English kind of gal.  Math and me, although acquaintances throughout grades K-12, could never quite solidify a close relationship.  Until now.

Apparently, it’s taken a love of healthy yummy food to reunite math and I in a well…loving, healthy relationship.  The key to our happiness?  Equations, of course!

1/3 cup oat bran + 1 (6-oz.) container Stonyfield French Vanilla yogurt + 1/3 cup skim milk +
2 spoonfuls unsweetened shredded coconut + 1/2 mashed naner
——————————————————————————————-
1/2 cup strawbs + spoonful raw almond buttah

Berrynananut Overnight Oat Bran

Without equations, how would I ever concoct the perfect bowl of Overnight Oat Bran (based off of Miss Snackface’s recipe)?  Hmmmm…I really need to reconsider math.  He has single-handedly revolutionalized the morning oatmeal industry and made Kath oat-famous ;).

Most of all, I would probably coming crashing down on my keyboard (with key indentations on my face) in the afternoons if it wasn’t for my yogurt-mixing abilities…courtesy of Mr. Math (obv).

1 container any type of yogurt + 1 cup berries (+/- 1/4 cup granola (optional)) = perfection

CIMG4349

fave afternoon schnack

The one place me and math differ?  M&M’s.  You can’t count them.  You just need to eat them.  Lots of them.  Preferably of the peanut or peanut butter variety.

M&M handful (x2) + chickety chai green tea = afternoon munchie perfection.

my fave are the yellows...probably b/c they are the worst artificial coloring

M&M handful (x2 or more) + 1 cup of chickety chai green tea
= a serious addiction

The best math however, involves both inanimate and animate objects.  In my case, that would be food + friends.  Probably one of the real tried and true equations there is out there.  Sorry Einstein….e=mc^2 just doesn’t cut it.

Roat Osha Thai food + long-time friends + a night of beach volleyball = a good night

These three dishes – split between the three of us ladies – was the perfect dinner (plus a nice lil’ 2nd helping of each).  It was also perfect pre-volleyball fuel for our last regular season game…which we WON!  Hallelujah…we do actually have some talent!

My final math equation:

X = breakfast
Y = all other food
Z = stress
a = friends
b = a job interview
c = handfuls of peanut M&Ms
d = going to bed

(X +3Y) x 3c
————————-
3a – 1/2Z + (bd)
=
good times

In the City of Chicago… July 19, 2009

…there is shopping to be had!

Yes, it’s true.  A lot of shopping to be had.  The weekend has absolutely flown by (as usual) but not before us ladies stormed every shop and boutique in this fabulous city!  We arrived late on Thursday night after a llloonngggg 6-hour drive and immediately hit the hay in preparation for dia numero uno en la ciudad de viento!

We prepped and primped then made our way into the city just in time for some lunch at a fabulous cafe in Bucktown – Northside Bar and Grill!

CIMG4284

Vegetarian Falafel Wrap + side salad with a dijon vinaigrette = SOOOO GOOD.

Me and my newest married friend, Jess.

Me and my newest married friend, Jess.

After lunch, we continued our way through the Logan Square neighborhood perusing all the fab boutiques and finding perhaps one of the greatest lil’ hidden treasures N. Damen Avenue has to offer…

CIMG4287

A Bucktown must!

Yes, the restaurant is called HOTCHOCOLATE.  Do you really need another reason to have to go inside?  Well, if you by chance do, know that the owner/chef Mindy Segal is a two-time James Beard award winner for Outstanding Pastry Chef.  She is the ridiculous genius behind this creation…

ONE YUMMY HOMEMADE OREO COOKIE.

ONE YUMMY HOMEMADE OREO COOKIE

Then it was more shopping!  No lie, I’ve made several purchases throughout the weekend.  However, us 5 ladies are perhaps the GREATEST bargain shoppers ever because I haven’t paid more than $50 for any one item – including a pair of jeans, one chunky sweater, a dress (for another wedding this weekend!), a blouse, three tank tops, a shirt and a pair of capri pants.  That totes deserves a woowoo!

We also headed to the completely adorable Lincoln Park neighborhood…

Beboppin' and shoppin' in Chitown...

Beboppin' and shoppin' in Chitown...

For dinner, we headed to the fabulous tapas restaurant Cafe Ba Ba Reeba!

Unfortunately, I didn’t snap any pics of any of the goods, but since it was all tapas-style, there were SO many plates at the table and small tastes of everything going around, it was foodie chaos!  However, the roasted beet salad with honey vinaigrette and Marcona almonds was FAB-U-LOUS!  It was all incredibly delicious, and I highly recommend this restaurant.  If for nothing else, than the caramelized bananas with vanilla ice cream!

Day #2 in Chicago was full of well, more shopping!  However, Jess’s mom didn’t feel too good on Saturday so instead of going into the city, we stuck closer to Jess’s apartment and headed off to the mall.  In the middle of shopping, I got uber-hangry and needed some fuel…pronto!  Luckily, one of my fave quick bites is also healthy…

Starbucks Power Protein Plate: bagel w/ PB, apple, grapes, cheese + hard-boiled egg. Perfect satiety on the run.

Starbucks Power Protein Plate: bagel w/ PB, apple, grapes, cheese + hard-boiled egg. Perfect satiety.

In a mall of fast food fanaticism, this was a much welcomed break.

Saturday night, we kept things low-key and went to see the movie My Sister’s Keeper.  Ummm…can you say sobfest?  I am not even that big of a crier (I have only really cried at the movies Forrest Gump + Armageddon in my life), but I was a huge, sobbing mess by the end of the movie.  Followed up by lotsa episodes of Sex and the City and Archer Farms Monster Trail Mix from Target (the best!), it was a fabulous girl’s evening :).

Breakfast this morning was a new, yummy combo…

Banana Nut Cheerios + Banana Nut Bear Naked granola + skim milk = yummalicious combo.

Banana Nut Cheerios + Banana Nut Bear Naked granola + skim milk = yummalicious combo.

Now, we are finishing watching more Sex and the City (can’t help it, we’re girls!) then hittin’ the road back to MN!  Be back later tonight with some on the fly eats from the day and more Chitown lovin’!
