18 Miles Later… August 30, 2009

...this is what I looked like.

It ain’t pretty, but it’s real.

18.15 miles.  2 hours 55 minutes. 9:30 minutes/mile.  Booyah.

A high protein, carbful post-run snack made me look feel slightly better…

Janetha C.C. Ranch Mix, beets + farmer's market plums

Actually, if I am going to be honest with y’all, the run was awesome.  Long, but awesome.  Honestly.  I think since I work out best in the afternoon; going to the farmer’s market in the morning, eating breakfast and then heading out at 1:30pm was like the miracle formula.  The 6 Cran-Razz Clif Shot Bloks I took throughout the run probably helped too.

(P.S. I LOVE how everyone thought the banana was an ice cream cone…ice cream in the mornin’? Heck yah.)

snacks at the grocery store (which were BOTH free - all hail coupon cutting!)

After the run, I tried to eat intuitively; not shove down massive calories because I could (which, don’t get me wrong, was reallllyyyy tempting…).  And it worked!  I would eat, usually feel full for an hour or two then was massively hungry again. Vroom, vroom metabolism!

For dindin, I whipped up a lil’ somethang with my farmer’s market finds

bed of mixed greens
zucchini + roma tomato (sauteed in EVOO + garlic)
lemon basil
lotsa parmigiano reggiano goodness
a side of 7-grain Kashi crackers

grilled veggie salad with Kashis

Plus, a post-dinner handful of Kashis.  Those things are ridiculously good.

And a dessert a la this girl and that girl

Then, being the wild n’ crazy grandma I am, I met up with my fabulous friend Brett for dranks (two Spotted Cow beers to be exact) then went dancing (and played wingwoman for him) at the local gay bar.  I<3 gay men.  Ummm…best. time. in a long time.  If you say dancing after running 18 miles, I am still there.  Good times were had, and I was in bed by 1am.  Perf.

This morning, I had breakfast in bed…

1 cup Stonyfield BaNilla yog
sprinkle o’ flax
sprinkle o’ almond meal
1/2 cup raspberries
1/4 cup Optimum Blueberry Cinnamon cereal

refreshing + delicious

Now I am sitting at a local coffeeshop, swiggin’ my cuppa joe and enjoying the gorgey day.  Happy Sunday 🙂

Are you a coupon cutter? I never used to be, but now I love it!!!

Pizzaliciousness August 2, 2009

Warning: You are in for a monster of a post my friends; so buckle up and let’s roll out!

Let’s flashback to Friday night….dinner was simple and tasty.  Most importantly, it was on the table within 10 minutes of arriving home from work.

eggs + whole wheat toast

Simple is best, no?

After dindin, it was me + 500 Days of Summer, which equated to a perfect solo night to recharge the batteries.  I headed to the indie theater in Minneapolis and thorough enjoyed the quirky, romantic comedy of a movie.  Not only do I have a crush on Joseph Gordon-Levitt (3rd Rock from the Sun, anyone?), but I officially also now have a girl crush on Zooey Deschanel (who also happens to be on the new cover of SELF mag!).

When I got home, my sister, her boyfriend and I spent the next 1 1/2 hours reading Texts From Last Night.  Completely inappropriate?  Of course.  Completely hilar?  Obv.

I slept in until 9am Saturday morn (that is late para mi!) and enjoyed a nice brekkie pre-run…

About an hour or so later, I bounded out for a 10 mile run.

Ummm…yeah, it didn’t go so hot.  I felt out of shape (hadn’t run since last Saturday), my chest was uber-tight and I miscalculated my run.  For some reason, I thought the route I planned was 10 miles, but it ended up being 8.  Don’t ask how I messed that one up.

I’m chalking that one up to getting back in the running groove. Since I haven’t done yoga in forev, I took more time to stretch myself out post-run while eating these…

one pound of strawbs consumed

Oops…I forgot to mention the other pound of strawberries (a 2 lb. container for 4$!) was consumed yesterday afternoon.  Yes, that means I’ve consumed 2 lbs. of strawbs in two days.

Lunchie made me feel better after the crappy run because I met one of my besties Megan out at Davanni’s – our date restaurant of choice!  This is what we ALWAYS order…

veggie white pizza...

...and diet coke = meg and holly's traditional date

...and diet coke = meg & holly's traditional date

After scarfing down 4 pieces and two Diet Cokes (it’s tradition!), we bebopped over to Target in search of Miss Fit herself…

jillian oh jillian, how i've needed thee!

jillian oh jillian, how i've needed thee!

Yes, that’s right, I am totally behind the times and JUST picked up Jillian’s 30-Day Shred!  Meg and I started talking about it at lunch because she wants to get uber-fit for her sister’s wedding in a month, so we tag teamed it and are going to Shred together!  Hot bods here we come!

Last night = top night.

I met Angharad from Eating for England out for dinner wine.  Lots more wine was consumed than food :).

notice how the pizza is still untouched but the glass of wine is definitely already half drank

We met up at a cute lil’ local pizza joint where Angharad’s hubs works and started off with what else? RED WINE.

notice: also 3/4 drank

Throughout our night of consuming one to many glasses of above said alchoholic beverage antioxidants, Angharad and I totally got to girl chat, gab, discuss and have some fabulous conversation.  I am honestly SO SAD that I only met her recently, and now I am moving to Madison :(.  It was obvious the blog heavens wanted us to be friends, so naturally we’ve already planned meet-up date #4.

cheers to new fabulous friends!

Also, I must note: Dan (her hubs) is equally as awesome.  Not only does he make killer pizza, but the man was the first person to challenge me whatsoever in the Countries of the World game on Sporcle.  Mad props Dan. Mad props.

This morning…not going to lie…slightly hungover.

Slight headache? Check. Slight gut rot? Check. Slight nausea? Check. Yep, def slight hangover.  I’ve downed a Nalgene of water this morning already, a slice of whole wheat toast with spread and took some Ibuprofen, so actually I’m not feeling too bad.  It was so worth it.

Special K w/ Red Berries, Blueberries + Skim MIlk

Special K w/ Red Berries, Blueberries + Skim MIlk

Also, I woke up at 8am (norm time) then fell back asleep until 10:30am!  Ummm, that happens like never.  Seriously, it felt so glorious, I can’t even tell you.

However, now I need to get a jumpsky on Sunday!  Possible schedule for the day (in random order)…

  • Coffee (this WILL be first)
  • Start the Shred (due to Drinker’s Remorse, sometimes I feel the need to punish my body for the activities of the night before)
  • Stop at the Goodwill to drop off donation
  • Pool
  • 7pm Yoga/Pilates Fusion class
  • Clean out car
  • Light grocery shopping
  • Organize finances
  • Bloggy thangs + bloggy reading

We’ll see if anything actually gets done…

Red Red Wine July 28, 2009

…you make me feel so fine.  You keep me rockin’, all of da time.

Ub40, anybody?

Not going to lie, I may have perhaps just slightly have drank too much red wine at dinner.  Mmmmmm…red red wine you give me whole heap of zing, whole heap of zing make me do my own thing.  Oops…more on that in a bit…

1/3 cup oat bran
1 (4-oz) container YoBaby peach yogurt
2 tbsp. unsweetened shredded coconut
1/3 cup skim milk

~ soaked overnight ~

1/2 cup strawbs
1 heaping tbsp. raw almond butter

Strawberry Coconut Overnight Oat Bran

Thank you Snackface :).

So dudes, my tumtum has been in absolutely rollercoaster butterfly fluttering mode all day.  I’ve been waiting to hear back from another job and wait which job to take.  This gal is rarely ever NOT HUNGRY and all day food did not sound good. Suriously dudes, this is a rarity.  I literally had to force this down…

organic rasps. yes, i ate the whole thing.

1 hardboiled egg
dried cranberries

Ummm…I’m watching the post-Bachelorette show, and can I date Reid please?  Soooo cute.  Okay, rando side note.  Did anyone see the lady hysterically crying in the audience when they re-played Jillian & Ed’s engagement? HILAR.

Also, sorry to anybody who may have had the Bach ending spoiled by my big mouth!  I promise a warning next time I give out spoilers on the blog!

After lunch, I got the job answer I had been waiting for!  I decided to take the job offer I got this last week!  Woowoo!  The only slightly sad part is that the job is back in Madison, Wisc. (my ol’ college stompin’ grounds), which means I have to leave Minnesota, which is so sad.  I have to leave new friends, like my fabulous new bloggy bud Angharad as well as my besties and family.  However, I am firm believer that everything happens for a reason – so I look forward to seeing what the future holds!

Suddenly, after I had made the decision, I was hungry again (haha!), hence this lovely…

After work (in which I could not concentrate the rest of the day – my mind was swinging from limb to limb thinking of the bajillion things I need to do), I ran home quickly then met my friend Brad for dinner.  He’s leaving in two days for Michigan (hollllaaaa Miss K!) for grad school, so we had one last get together at Azia Restaurant, a delicious restaurant which prides itself on “Asian spice meets Minnesota nice,” love it!

Vietnamese Tofu Pho...soooo good!

Brad = suriously one of the funniest peeps ever.  Hence why, two hours later I found myself laughing hysterically, tearing up in laughter and definitely drunkity drunk drunk drunk on red wine.  He also pointed out that yesterday, I accidentally wrote I was meeting up with people from my, pubic relations internship” instead of what it should have been – “public relations internship.”  Just a slight difference between the two – he referred to it as a “hairy” situation ;).

After dindin, I may just have had a couple spoonfuls of vanilla ice cream to seal the deal for the night.

Now, I am feeling excited, overwhelmed and nervous for all the changes ahead.  I start my new job August 10th – eeeeeekkkk, that’s like less than a couple weeks!  So much to do, so little time.  I didn’t run 3 miles today like planned – I figured another day off to celebrate wouldn’t be the worst thing in the world :).

Gotta runsky, but I hope y’all had a fab day!

What’s your fave 80’s tune?  Red Red Wine most def ranks high on the list!

Right or Left-Brained? July 19, 2009

If you have to ask yourself this question, you are most likely right-brained (like me!).

This gal is back from Chitown and ready to get back in a routine!  Honestly, I never thought I would enjoy routine.  I always thought my  mind was too right-brained to ever think I would like such a thing.  (BTW…you know you are right-brained when you have to Google right vs. left brain because you can’t remember which one you are :))

I made up for the lack of veggies this weekend by having a ginormous salad for dindin…

spinach + mixed greens
green peas
1/2 hard-boiled egg
sunflower seeds
Annie’s Cheddar Bunnies
drizzle balsamic + EVOO

1.1 lbs. of the ultimate junk salad

Ummm…I think the fact that Kowalski’s had Annie’s Cheddar Bunnies on their salad bar pretty much made my day.

After dinner, I ran a couple errands then headed home where I hung all my new purchases in the closet.  Does anybody else absolutely love putting away their new clothes and color coordinating their closet?  Oh my gosh, I just realized maybe I do have some left-brained in me, haha!

Then it was grocery shopping time…I ran about 2.5 miles then looped perfect back around to the grocery store so I would only have to walk about 1/2 mile home with all my goods.  It felt soooo good to get my legs moving (especially after spending 6 hours in a car…ugh!) and refill my kitch with some essentials…

The spread

  • Naners
  • Dominex Eggplant Cutlets (a product I first saw from Miss Chocolate Covered Katie)
  • 3 Stonyfield Organic Nonfat yogurts (French Vanilla, Lemon & Peach)
  • Bag of mixed veggies
  • Yellow onion
  • Bag of spinach
  • Mango
  • Strawberries
  • Bluebs
  • Avocado

Taking a cue from my bloggy bud Angharad of Eating for England, I showed ya all my goods and now here is le grand total…

That would be $20.84 my friends

That would be $20.84 my friends

Click here to take the grocery challenge!  I usually budget about $50 on food – groceries + eating out included.  Therefore, I gots about another $30 to work with this week. We’ll see where it takes us!

This week promises to be another busy one.  I am taking care of my cousin’s dog this week along with…

Tuesday: 12-mile run (make-up from this weekend)
Wednesday: Last beach volleyball game before play-offs
Thursday: Hang with my London mate/bestie Charlotte
Friday: Possible shopping excursion for Nordstrom’s Anniversary Sale (CANNOT miss this!)
Saturday: Wedding time for my mom’s best friend’s son + 13-mile run

Whew…I’m tired already. I’ve got to get some sleep to read all your lovely comments and catch-up on blog reading tomorrow – night y’all!

Are you right-or left-brained?  I am totally interested to see where people fall on the spectrum!

Rest & relaxation.  That is what’s hopefully ahead for me this weekend – although, I always say that and manage to find some shenanigans to partake in…

Brekkie was fast and delish – Tarjay Heartsmart cereal, blueberries & vanilla oat milk, and I was out the door in 10 minutes to make a quick ‘Bou run before work!

I munched on another 1/2 cup or so of berries on my way to work, thus finishing off the pint.  Unfortunately, since breakfast lacked some belly-sustaining protein, I was forced to munch on these buggers just a couple hours later:

These True North Citrus Burst nut clusters are really addicting – ummm, when the serving size is only 5 pieces, you know you’ve hit some dangerous food territory.  I also found an Apple Cinnamon flavor in these – danger ahead, I repeat, danger ahead.

Today was another bovine grazing day, so a couple hours after the nutty goodness, I dove into  a regular ol’ side salad.  Spinach, beets, tomato, sunflower seeds + Newman’s Sesame Ginger vinaigrette…

Yes, that is my to-do list on the classy yellow Post-It.

During my lunch hour, I bebopped over to Tarjay and prayed that I wouldn’t spend over $20.  Whelp, that didn’t happen.  I came out with a bunch of stuff I really didn’t need, including a new pair of gold sandals (11$!!!), a bowl/plate combo ($0.74 and $0.88, respectively), an Annie’s Rice & Bean Burrito (which I ate when I got back) and some other crap essentials.

Work was eerily quiet today – I swear almost everyone was gone by the time I got back from Target.  I snacked on another 4th of July Tootsie Pop (this time in blue raspberry) and got back to some work.  At around 3pm, I was feeling a bit snacky so I brought out the big guns for the 2nd day in a row:

Stonyfield Farms Oikos Honey Greek yogurt
1/4 cup Target Heartsmart cereal
1 smashed banana
1 tbsp. peanut butter

Love.  The world needs this too.

It was another stellar combo except…

I didn’t love the Oikos Honey flavor.  Shocker, I know!  I love honey, and I love Greek yogurt – together however, I think it might have been too sweet?  The ingredients said it had honey and sugar in it, so maybe together it was all too much?  I’m a little disappointed, but I loved all the other flavors so much, I’m not worried.  Now, I just need to find the elusive new strawberry flavor…

I am sore from yoga last night, so I’m definitely taking today as a rest day so I can get up and run those 9 miles tomorrow morning – eeks!  So, I’m not sure what I’m going to do tonight – dinner + movie, perhaps?

Woowoo for the work week being done and another woowoo for the weekend!  Have a fabulous weekend everyone – see ya around :).

R.I.P. Michael Jackson :(.

I am seriously so sad you guys – I literally grew up on MJ’s music.  It’s really the best cure-all when you are in a bad mood…how can you not smile when you hear “The Way You Make Me Feel”?    Thank you MJ for your ragin’ music, awesomer dance moves and for always giving us something to talk about (you know what I’m talkin’ about…).  My thoughts and prayers are with the Jackson fam!

Onto happier things…breakfast started out with a cool bowl of cereal – perfect for this lil’ heatwave we are having.  Tarjay Heartsmart, sliced naners, slivered almonds and vanilla oat milk~

I had my usual cuppa joe with skim milk when I got to work, and then the morning absolutely flew by!  I have no idea where it went.  That rarely happens, so I enjoyed it to the fullest by having this snackarooni at about 11:30am…

At around nooner, this gal headed out into the less hot (but still quite warm) sunshine and sweated her way through a lovely 30 minute walk.  It felt soooo good to get outside, especially because mis ojos were glued to the computer screen all morning, and I am pretty sure I was on the verge of going blind.  Upon my return, I had the most gl-gl-gl-gl-glorious bowl of yogurt (an idea I stole from the fabulous Miss Jenny)…

Stonyfield Farms Oikos plain Greek yogurt
1/4 cup Tarjay Heartsmart cereal
1 smashed banana
1 heaping tbsp. peanut butter

Peace.  The world needs it.

This fab combo seriously held me over all afternoon – with the protein-packed yogurt + peanut butter, it kept me cruising through an afternoon of work.  However, mid-afternoon, I did have to bust out a 4th of July Tootsie Pop in Cherry.

Then later in the afternoon, it was more YOGURT!  My fridge is sparse and looks quite sad :(.  Soooo…it is that time of the week to use up what I have, and thankfully I have my Oikos Greek yogurt!  Not only was the plain yogurt delicious (tangy, thick and creamy) but the vanilla was even better.  The touch of sweetness in the vanilla is just enough to set off that sometimes too tangy taste – and with only 11 grams of sugar (some of which are the natural milk sugars).  Holla!

Then I got the sad news about our friend, The King of Pop.

I worked until 5pm, braved the still horrendous traffic home and quickly made dindin.  Berry salad with slivered almonds (with a drizzle of EVOO/honey/lime juice), whole wheat kaiser roll and some beets on the side (I was going to name this post Beets, Bears, Battlestar Galactica after Dwight, then refrained).  Mama Everythingtarian introduced me to beets like a year ago, and I LOVE THEM.

After dinner, I organized my to-do list (it never seems to get any shorter), got ready for Fitness Yoga and popped a couple of True North Citrus Burst nut clusters before gettin’ my chi centered.

This handful x2.  I sweated my little buns off in yoga today – lots of Vinyasa-esque flows, chaturangas, downward dogs.  I was supposed to run 3 miles (per Hal Higdon) today, but I wasn’t feeling it, so I headed off to yoga instead.  I think I will make up the 3 miles tomorrow or just skip it – I have to run 9 on Saturday anyways :).

When I got home, I popped two more nut clusters.

Please hop over to This Winding Road and help Miss Jenn Girl compile the ultimate 90’s playlist!  If for no other reason, do it in memory of Michael Jackson and write down all his 90’s hits.

Alrighty, I think I’m going to sneak in some reading, take a quick rinse off before bed and hit the hay, because tomorrow is Fridayyyy!!!

Any weekend plans for anyone?  I have a buncha movies I want to see (Away We Go, My Sister’s Keeper & Food, Inc.), but other than that, my schedule looks pretty open.  Ahhh…I love that feeling…
