Can’t go wrong with dindin when you start out with some English Cheddar :).

Followed up with a ginormous garden of veggies and a book about musicals, can you really get any better?

baby spinach
shredded carrots
1/2 avocado
diced tomato
green onion
yellow zucchini
sprinkle of ground flax
sunflower seeds
Wee Willy’s Homemade Red French dressing

Pre-Bachelorette fuel

(a.k.a. a hot mess of Kashi GoLean cereal, 1/2 smashed naner + 1 tbsp. peanut butter)

Seven o’clock rolled around, and it was Bachelorette time!  I don’t really watch any TV, but somehow this totally guilty pleasure sneaks into my schedule every Monday night :).  Hence, a Bachelorette work-out plan!

The Bachelorette Work-Out Plan

Warm-up: 10 minute brisk walk

Commercial #1:  Abs (crunches + scissors)
#2:  Wide-leg squats
#3: Vinyasa Flow
(downward dog – plank – chaturanga – upward dog – downward dog)
#4: Hamstring stretches
#5: Jumping jacks
#6: Planks + side planks
#7: Forward hanging fold
#8: Low yoga lunges
#9: Texting frenzy with my Bachelorette-watching girls
(Major drama: Ed came back and wants a 2nd chance with Jillian!!!)
#10: 3 sets of 10 push-ups

Cool down:  10 minutes of stretching

Ugggghhhhhhh….SHE KEPT WES!!!  Big mistake Jillian, big mistake.  I still heart Michael :).

If I do say so myself, TV + workout was a pretty friggin’ fabulous idea, haha!  Now I am off to do some reading, pack my lunch for tomorrow (because I am clearly in 3rd grade) then hit the hay – hope everyone had a fabulous night!

Anyone else have any good ideas of quick work-outs to do during TV commercials?  Let us know and share the knowledge!

Combos + No Shows June 28, 2009

After the post of just a couple hours ago, I did exactly what Miss Holly needed to do:  I blogged, did my laundry, watered the plants, put away the dishes, cleaned the kitchen and made dinner.  Who am I?  That all sounds way to domestic for my taste :).

Dinner was inspired by my semester abroad in London…you see, one of the popular eats in our flat (ahem, apartment) was some yummy English White Cheddar made into a grilled cheese sandwich and dipped in BARBECUE SAUCE!  It was the genius concoction of my friend Meghan, and we were seriously OBSESSED with it.  Flash forward to tonight, I knew I had to have me some grilled cheese + BBQ sauce, along with steamed asparagus and MN grown cherry tomatoes

After a delicious dinner, I was sooo excited to finish up the weekend with yoga/pilates.  Unfortunately, Kris (the substitute instructor this week) was not as keen.  She didn’t show up – mondo annoying!!!  Instead, I relied on the reigning yoga queen with 2 run-throughs of Yoga For Runners – making it a quick yet effective 20-minute yoga sesh.

Now I should probably be productive since I have an extra hour on my hands :).

What’s worse – an instructor not showing up for class or a bad instructor?  I am going to go with an instructor not showing up, just because at least if it’s a crappy instructor, you are still getting somewhat of a workout, right?

Fruitful Day June 9, 2009

Good evening my little online blogarinos!

As the title of my post suggests, today was full of fruit!  The fruitaliciousness started bright and early this morning with a poopy green monster!  Today’s concoction included:

1 cup vanilla almond milk
4 cups spinach
1 banana
1 cup berry frozen fruit mix (cherries, raspberries, mango & boysenberries)

I’m not going to lie, I was drrraaggggiinnnggg today – the past week really took it out of this gal (and that is hard to do!).  However, the green monster and getting almost all my veggie servings by 7am did perk me up a bit.  However, due to lack of protein, this gal was starvin’ by 10am.  Enter…my newest Larabar purchase

It was delicious – Lara just doesn’t disappoint.

Over my lunch break, I headed back over to the gym for a nice lil’ lunchie workout.  I created a quick cardio and toning plan to keep my heart rate up and my glutes a-burnin’.  If you only have a bit of time to work out, this is really a fast, all-over workout.  Here’s the plan Stan:

Lunchtime Cardio/Toning Circuit

5 min.     Run
5 min.     50 walking lunges + 10 walking push-ups
10 min.   Elliptical
5 min.     50 wide leg squats + 25 bicep curls + 25 tricep kickbacks + 25 shoulder shrugs
5 min.     Run
5 min.     Various ab exercises (scissors, leg raises, crunches, etc.)
5 min.     Stretching

For a grand sweating total of….40 minutes!

When I got back to work, I dug into one of the easiest and most delicious meals there is….CEREAL!  If you were a childhood fan of Senor Captain Crunch, please drop what you are doing right now (except if you are reading my blog, of course!) and run to the store and buy Kashi Honey Sunshine.  It’s like healthified Cap’n Crunch!

Along with skim milk and a fantastic, juicylicious peach….

Before I forget, I feel like y’all need a little Holly Investigates… update.  You see, with my busy schedule of late, I haven’t really had the time to devote to investigating all those little health-related bits I love so much.  Sooo, I’ve decided it won’t quite be feasible to post a new one every Monday, but I will do my best to churn out a couple a month.  Deal?

Snacktime was the usual glorious combo of yogurt/berries/muesli

After work, I headed over to my sister’s NEW house to help her paint her bathroom.  Nothing like a little sisterly bonding time over a tub of gray paint in a confined bathroom :).  It surprisingly was quite the workout – between crouching in crevices, holding up lighting devices and painting up a storm, my arms are feelin’ it!

On the way to her house, I snacked on an oats + honey granola bar as I swore/cursed/raged with anger patiently navigated the rush hour traffic.

Driving to my sister’s was complicated by a slight bloody nose in the car (nuff’ said there).  Upon arrival and before painting, I dug into the salad I had brought (pat on the back to me for thinking and planning ahead – patpat!).

sunflower seeds
garbanzo beans
Newman’s Sesame Ginger vinaigrette

While painting, I snacked on these babies + a Diet Coke…

These almonds were delicious – there were about 2 servings in the bag.  They were roasted with paprika, onion powder, garlic powder and some other spices.  They were savory and super delish!  I might have to buy these suckers again…I might have also had a couple handfuls of my sister’s Gardetto’s – anybody else have a deep childhood love for Gardetto’s like myself?

After painting, it was errands to the bank and Target, then home to sadly throw away two of my favorite pairs of ballet flats.  Tears.  They were good to me while they lasted; however, I wasn’t the best to them.  They were worn down, a bit smelly and had seen their days.  Rest in peace my favorite gold and magenta flats.  Rest in peace.

More sad news today…I found out that the possible nanny job in Australia fell through.  Apparently, the doctor I was going to nanny for found another job, so no heading Down Under for me :(.  Guess that means SOMEBODY has to hire me before my temp job runs out.  Any takers?

Now, I am going to finish blogging, finish a freelance writing project due tomorrow then get my buns to bed, hopefully for 5:30am yoga.  I don’t know if it is going to happen (I am one tired girl!), but there is no harm in hoping.

Anybody have any good ideas for a potential career/job/future for moi?  Let me know PLEASE :).

I almost forgot…check out Peanut Butter and Jenny for a truly fabulous, awesome and amazing giveaway.  That’s just Miss Jenny for ya :).

Good Day, Good Earth April 28, 2009

Whew – what a day!  More on that later, but now I need to pick-up where I left off last night!  I ended up going for a nice 4-mile run last night, came home and ate one of my favorite snacks – almond butter and banana baby!  With a cup of caffeine-free Good Earth Sweet & Spicy tea (one of my Favorite Things), perfection!

This morning was a LOOOONNNGGGG one.  I got up and made an easy AB+J with a naner.  Instead of downing multiple cups of coffee like normal, I stuck to one at work.  I’ve been trying to cut down on my caffeine intake, especially limiting pop and coffee, while drinking more tea.  Good idea in theory.  In practice, doesn’t always work so much. 🙂

Mid-morning, I couldn’t resist another one of these delicious babies.  This time…CHERRY PIE!

I took a long lunch today, which I like to do a day or two a week to break up the monotony of sitting behind a desk all day.  Since the fitness club is a mere 200 feet out our back door, it makes it super easy to squeeze in a workout.  Today was 30 minutes on the elliptical plus about 20 minutes of toning exercises.  I have a quick circuit I like to do.  It’s a great all around toner and even tires you out like cardio.

10 wide-arm push-ups
20 mountain climbers
10 lower ab raises (lift straight legs from 180 degrees straight up to 90 degrees)
20 toe touches (touch toes, jump out to plank, jump back in and reach for sky)
10 tricep push-ups

Each set should take about 5 minutes (including 1 minute rest in between).  Repeat as many times as you want!

Today’s lunch looks eerily similar to yesterday…does it not?  Plus a little trail mix – I was extra hungry after the workout!

The thing about buying and making food for yourself is…although it’s cheaper and great because you can make whatever YOU want, you end up with a lot of the same thing!  Does this snack also look familiar?  Today it was honey flavor TJ’s Greek yogurt!

Dinner was FABULOUS!  I met up with my future Amazing Race partner Megan, and we planned our Amazing Race 15 application over dinner at Good Earth Cafe!  Sooooo good!  It’s a restaurant that specializes in healthy, vegetarian, environmentally-friendly meals.  More importantly, the food is freakin’ delish!

Looking at the menu, I was drooling over it all, but I decided on the Stuffed Poblano Pepper with adzuki and pinto beans.  Heaven on a plate was more like it!  Plus a chunk of nummy bread with a swab of red pepper hummus for starters and a cup of the classic Sweet & Spicy tea…my perfect meal!

And finally….I present dessert….one peanut butter blondie and one turtle bar, both topped with vanilla frozen yogurt (we shared both)!  Happily stuffed, we headed back to Meg’s apartment and concocted our AR15 video.  CBS here we come!
