Boring Is Not So Bad August 25, 2009

Ever have one of those days where nothing really happens…you just go about your day and nothing is out of the ordinary spectacular or bad?  That was today para mi.

It started out with a delicious breakfast cookie, courtesy of our fave sista of fitness:

1/2 cup oats
2 tbsp. hemp protein powder
1 heaping tbsp. raw AB
2 tbsp. shredded coconut
1/4 cup skim milk
1 sliced banana

a breakfast cookie is always a star

I don’t know what it is, but these just don’t fill me up!  Suriously, I was hungry like 3 hours later. I even did some nutrish calculating to see if I was getting enough sustenance…well, about 500 cals, 15 grams of protein and lotsa fiber should fill a gal up for reals!

Followed up with a yummy mid-morning PURE bar I won in Kristin’s giveaway, which I snarfed before my meeting (because it was one of those meetings where you are not sure how long it will last).

Lunchie was banana-ful as well as tomater-ful…

More work, planning, writing and my fave mid-afternoon snack of choice: Greek yog + fruit.

If I had to pick a lowlight of the day, this would be it.  I maybe drank like 1/6 of it – sorry POM, I normally love your juice but this tea was NOT cutting it.  I wasn’t even going to offer it to a co-worker.  That’s how much I did not like it.

POMx Pomegranate Lychee Green Tea - not so good...

POMx Pomegranate Lychee Green Tea - yeah, not so good...

At 5pm, I skedaddled home and out the door for a 6 mile run.  Done in just under an hour, it didn’t feel awesome but didn’t feel bad either.  See what kind of humdrum iffy day I am having?

Fortunately, dinner was anything but iffy.  In fact, it was sooo good and sooo satisfying!  Dindin hit the spot while watching The Office online, featuring the King of TWSS himself.  Michael Scott is probs my 2nd favorite character…Kevin is my first.  I can’t help it, everytime he does Kool-Aid man I seriously wet myself.  For the record however, I will one day become Mrs. Jim Halpert (or preferably, Mrs. John Krasinski).

I guess if I consider a day like this boring….boring ain’t so bad.

Running Well, Wedding Bells + Internet Hell August 16, 2009

Yep, that pretty much sums up my weekend.

Let’s start with the good stuff – I got up at 7am bright n’ early on Saturday morning and ate a nice carb-heavy pre-run meal consisting of a 1/2 cup Special K with 1/2 cup skim milk and a chocolate chip granola bar.  There is no better running fuel than pure white carbs.

Then, yours truly did what she has NEVER done before – run 16 miles!

The first 9 miles went well despite the Minnesota heat and humidity.  I made sure to make frequent water stops (also stopping to splash water on my head to cool down) before returning back to my friend Ashley’s where I popped 3 Clif Black Cherry Shot Bloks and some Diet Cherry Pepsi (don’t judge).  Then Ashley headed out with me to finish the last 7 miles, and my other friend Megan joined us for the last 3 miles.  My friends are seriously the best :).

In the end? The run went AWESOME.  I finished in my marathon pace of just under 10:00 minutes/mile, equaling about 2 hours and 40 minutes.  I seriously think I could have gone even further. It was that kind of glorious running day.

Indian buffet of love from Whole Foods...with a Cilantro Chutney Samosa!

Seriously…if I could marry Indian food I would.  Shhhhh, don’t tell McMac I am cheating on him ;).

After lunchie, it was off to IKEA –  ummm, holy anxiety!  Soooo many people, soooo many things to look at and tooooo little time.  Luckily, I had my trusted Meggy Moo in tow.  If this isn’t a friend, I don’t know what is:

Then, I gussied myself up and headed off to my girl Charlotte’s wedding!  Charlotte and I studied abroad together in college in London, and we’ve pretty much been soulmates ever since.  LOVE that girl.  I also got to see Brittany (who also studied abroad with us) for the first time in years.  LOVE that girl too.

Yeah, that’s right.  My girl Char had a plethora of CHEESECAKES at her wedding instead of regular ol’ wedding cake.  That is reason #4,276 that we are friends.  Brittho and I may have split an additional piece of Key Lime Cheesecake.  Just sayin…

Did I mention Charlotte also had a photo booth AND late-night pizza?  Reasons #3,231 and #6,121,989 we are friends.

When I got home, I crashed harder than Lindsey Lohan’s career.

After almost 10 hours of glorious sleep, I woke up to coffee and a lovely chat with Ashley.  Then, right as I started contemplating eating Ash’s carpet, it was 10:30am and time for me to meet another fabulous lady you all know – Ms. Angharad!

We met at the Uptown Diner…looks like a total dive from the outside, but inside you will find such fabulous delicacies such as this…

After brekkie, I skedaddled back on the road (wasn’t I just driving?) back to Madison.  Five LONG hours later, I arrived safely.  After successful shopping trip #2 at the co-op (including a free coupon for a French Meadow bread product and a bottle of organic agave syrup – score!), I made it back to my apartment to find the Internet still not working.

WTF?!?!?!?!

I can’t handle this.  ATT is apparently coming on Tuesday to fix it, but that means another two days of paying for coffee at the cute coffeeshop for free Wi-Fi.  I guess there could be worse thangs…

After getting really frustrated and angry speaking calmly with the Internet peeps, I needed a snackie.  Enter in perhaps, my other new love (sorry McMac AND Indian food :()

I just scrolled through the post and realized it’s practically a marathon long, which by the way, the Twin Cities Marathon is in T-minus 49 days.  Eeeeeeek!

Bloggy thangs I still have planned (even if they are taking uber-longer than I expected):

  • Marathon training post
  • Holly Investigates… post (It’s been 75% done for like three weeks now!)
  • Two exciting announcements
  • Updates

Hang in there my children…mama WILL eventually get there!

Now, I am downing the rest of my drank and gettin’ down to read some bloggy love!  Say a prayer for my Internet por favor and have a relaxing Sunday night!

Highlight of the weekend?  Put it out there peeps!  Mine was probably the amazing run on Saturday morning and the pictures Char, Britt and I took in the photo booth.  They were epic.

Angus, meet my foodie friends.  Foodie friends, meet Angus (a.k.a. The Beast)…

Angus the Beast

objects appear much smaller than they are in real life

He’s my bud for the week.  At least I won’t have to worry about kidnappers or anything – this dog would scare anyone away.  Good thing he is secretly uber-mild mannered.  Just don’t tell the kidnappers that :).

Breakfast was quick and satisfying (T.W.S.S.) – Banana Nut Cheerios + skim milk alongside a naner + AB.

A classic b'fast combo.

classic b'fast combo

One of the benefits of taking care of your cousin’s dog is (a) having a brand new eco-friendly apartment to stay in for the week (made of astroturf and recycled materials!), and (b) raiding other peep’s pantries!  I had full permission from the cuz to eat whatev, and I happily found these little darlings in the cupboard…

CIMG4328

Who is this Mrs. May and why haven't I met her before?

Look at those kernels of goodness.

kernels of goodness

Holy yummola, these were fabulous!  They are little crunchy nut clusters filled with dried berries, almonds, cashews, pistachios and sesame seeds (bound together with rice malt + evaporated cane juice).  Dee-lish!  It was 2 servings in the bag (pooey!), but those 350 kcals were well worth it!  I am definitely going to go purchase these on my own, which is saying a lot since I am totes poor.

Lunch was a lovely colorful snack plate of assorted goods…

CIMG4335

veggie wrap, veggies + Zoe PB bar

Afternoon snack was no surprise…

1 cup strawbs + bluebs
Stonyfield Organic nonfat lemon yogurt
sprinkle Zoe Honey + Almond granola

Classic afternoon snack bowl.

I got a pile of work at the end of the day, which kept me busy until check-out time at 4:30pm.  I tried to get home ASAP because quite frankly, even though I’m not the hugest fan of dogs (due to a traumatic childhood incident involving my neighbor’s LARGE show poodles – it’s a long story), Angus looked really sad this morning.  I felt so bad leaving him all day :(.

However, I got home, let the beast out in the dog park (yes, the apartment building has a courtyard dog park!) and prepared to make a smashing good dinner…

spinach
hunk o’ pine nut hummus
1/2 avocado
sprinkle of onion
celery sticks
handful of bluebs
2 Wasa crackers
drizzle of flax oil (another pantry find!)

Rando combos = the best ever.  This will be the perfect 12-mile run fuel – I don’t feel weighted down at all but yet totally energized.  A good mix of protein, carbs + fat to hopefully not die complete the 12 miles in record time!

Alright, enough procrastinating.  I gotta go let Angus out once more before I go running, then I need to get dressed (often the toughest part for me!) and get my buns out the door.  Let’s hope it doesn’t rain on me (the clouds are a bit ominous!) and a snack will DEFINITELY be had when I get back…errr…if I get back….

What is your favorite rando combo?  Let me hear it dudes!  I grew up with a dad who LOVED vanilla ice cream + raspberry jelly + Lay’s potato chips.  To this day, it might still be my fave rando combo.

Slapdash Mash July 16, 2009

Beware…rando eats ahead!  Since I’m heading off to the Windy City for a ladies’ weekend o’ fun in a mere 1 1/2 hours, I have not replenished with a fresh food stash this week.  Hence, today’s eats so far are a slapdash mash of whatev was left in the kitch.  Starting with brekkie…

CIMG4264

AB + smashed naner + Ezek + cinnamon (x2 of course!)

This beauty held me over for awhile, then it was grazing time!  A little bit of scone yumminess from Bread & Chocolate, one of my favorite St. Paul haunts, courtesy of a coworker…

CIMG4266

1/2 Berry Lemon Scone - have I told you how much I LOVE scones? Because I do.

CIMG4269

Blueberry lovin', and yes, I ate all of them.

I tried this new Kashi dude, courtesy of Angharad of Eating for England, who I met up with last night for a delectably delicious bloggy dinner.  The verdict?  Well, as soon as I opened it up, the sweet smell of coffee wafted into my nose.  That is a good start.  A very good start.  Overall, the bar was really good – it’s definitely not my fave by any means but when you mix chocolate + coffee, you have a winner in my book.

CIMG4281

Look at those chunks of jelly in my new fave AB+PB+J trail mix from Trader Joe's...mmmmmm!

So, yes – yours truly ate a real slapdash (definition: in a careless or reckless manner) of foods on this lovely Thursday.  I guess that’s what you get when you fall asleep on the couch and wake-up at 12:30 having done nothing you needed to get done don’t plan ahead.  Sorry to make this an extremely uninteresting post, but I gotta run out the door and get my buns on the road to Chi-town ladies and gents!  Woowoo for an early weekend!

In the meantime, check out my guest post at No Meat Athlete to get more of your Healthy Everythingtarian fix.  I’ll explore the wonderful world of global vegetarian food… (hint, hint: beer totally counts!)  😉

I won’t be blogging in Chicago, but stay tuned on Sunday for a recap of the weekend’s eats, fun, purchases (shopping WILL be involved) and shenanigans.

Hope y’all have a fabulous weekend!

Lessons Learned at the Cabin… July 12, 2009

…a.k.a. MY 100th POST!!!

Before I enlighten you all with some wisdom for the ages, I just wanted to say thank you to ALL OF YOU (yeah, you!) for supporting, reading, commenting, offering advice, helping out and ultimately, making it possible for me to get to 100 posts.  Thank y’all so much – here’s to another 100!

🙂

Life lessons learned this weekend…

(1) Better to eat your fruits and veggies BEFORE a cabin weekend, because unfortunately, beer doesn’t count as a serving of grains, Cheetos are of no calcium or dairy value and Twizzlers (although cherry-flavored), make no dent for your RDA of fruits.

CIMG4168

Friday Dinner Part 1: spinach, carrots, sprouts, strawberries, walnuts + EVOO/honey dressing.

CIMG4167

Friday Dinner Part 2: toasted Ezek, PB, smashed banana + cinnamon.

(2) Small town Minnesota just isn’t given the credit it deserves.  I mean, where else would you find a Swedish tea kettle water tower emblazoned with, “Valkommen lill Lindstrom”?

Lindstrom's sister city is Tingsryd, Sweden, FYI.

Lindstrom's sister city is Tingsryd, Sweden, FYI.

(3) During a dive bar pub crawl, it’s best to stop taking pictures after beer #3.  That way, you still look fresh and fabulous in all your pictures (even if you don’t feel like that the next day).

CIMG4169

Beer #1 at Blacksmiths...looking fresh-faced and smiley.

CIMG4173

Beer #3 at Indianhead: Still smiling, having fun and looking totally with-it.

You see, now didn’t we look fabulous all evening? 😉

(4) There is one exception to rule #3: even if you are past (or well-past) beer #3, singing karaoke at The Thirsty Otter bar for Michael Jackson tribute night ALWAYS requires a picture – even if you look completely drunk doing it.  I learned this one the hard way.  There is no picture on my camera of Megan & I’s stunning rendition of “The Way You Make Me Feel” :(.

(5) Boat snacks do not have to include junk food; they can actually be rather healthy.

CIMG4189

TJ's trail mix - always a winner!

CIMG4192

Whole wheat pita chips + roasted red pepper hummus: the snack of champion boaters everywhere.

(6) Even though it’s the cabin, I still need to try and look in a mirror once or twice.

CIMG4190

Note to self: stop scaring the children with Medusa hair.

(7) To each his own.  Just because someone says they love pineapple wine and bought 8 bottles of it from Hawaii, that doesn’t mean you will like pineapple wine (which I didn’t, for the record).

CIMG4193

Finished maybe 1/2?

(8) And most disappointingly, charge your camera BEFORE going away for a cabin weekend.  Otherwise, the world misses out on the crab/lobster/scallop feast of Saturday night followed by gourmet salads and an array of desserts, including Banana Cream Cheesecake, Chocolate Molten Cake and Apple Cherry Crisp, and ending with a ginormous food baby.  I’m am so sorry there is no pic – but trust me, it was completely delish ;).

Now, it’s back to reality.  Of course, I didn’t eat the best these past two days (lots of unhealthy food went unphotographed) but ya know what?  That’s what the cabin is for.  No guilt, just back the norm routine.  After a breakfast of cereal, blueberries + skim milk and a Subway veggie sammie lunch with Grandpa, this lady has a crapload to do.  However, I did make sure to make a TJ’s run on my way home.  This one’s for you Miss Jenny – look at my new Trader Joe’s find!

CIMG4195

Peanuts, berries (dried strawberries & raspberries to be exact) and almonds – it’s like a PB+AB+J sammie!  Does it get any better than that? Review to come on this pronto, I promise!  TJ’s also had a 2 lb. container of blueberries for $5.49 – SCORE! It’s going to be a berry-licious week (worst corny joke ever, I know).

This afternoon, I just had to try my new AB+PB+J mix I picked up at TJ’s so I poured me a nice 1/4 cup serving…

CIMG4196

The verdict?  YUM, YUM, YUM!  The dried berry combo added to the peanuts & almonds was addicting, as in this could be my new go-to crack snack.  I HIGHLY recommend you go out and buy this gem of a trail mix.  There are no added oils in the mix, and it is sweetened with evaporated cane juice ~ TJ’s, you are a genius.

Dindin was a junk salad

spinach
1/4 cup carrots
alfalfa sprouts
tomatoes
handful grapes
handful blueberries
crushed walnuts
drizzle EVOO + honey

CIMG4198

I swear, junk salads are best – just throw in whatever you have and enjoy!

Then it was running time.  The run was fine – I ran a little less than 7 miles in just over an hour.  But I do have to say, it is an absolutely gorgeous night out, which always makes running easier.  When I got home, I knew it was time to try my new box of Banana Nut Cheerios.  With a healthy splash of vanilla almond milk…

CIMG4199

The verdict on these babies?  Do you love banana nut muffins? Because if so, you will LOVE these as I did.  They have the perfect amount of banana nut flavor and almost felt more like a dessert than a bowl of cereal.  I devoured them in about 3 minutes flat.  Let’s take a closer look however…

PROS
– 25% RDA iron/50% RDA folic acid (per serving)
– Flavored with banana puree (not fake banana flava)

CONS
– 2nd ingredient is sugar
– Corn syrup is one of the ingredients

Overall, I think I would buy these every once in awhile.  I wouldn’t make it my go-to cereal, because with 1 gram protein/1 gram fiber, I don’t think it will hold me over for very long.  However, for a late night snack, afternoon munchies or topping perhaps on yogurt, these babies are delish!

    Sunday’s to-do list:

    1. Laundry
    2. E-mails
    3. Run 7 miles (found out my long run is actually 7 – not 9 – miles this week!)
    4. Clean room
    5. Job applications
    6. Make a veggie-ful dinner
    7. Catch up on blog reading/blog dinner
    8. BED!!!

Now off to finish my to-do list…gotta fold laundry, finish some job apps and finish catching up on blogs!

What was the highlight of your weekend?  Mine was definitely the dive bar pub crawl of Friday night – karaoke + Michael Jackson tribute night + family fun at the bar = A GOOD TIME.

Don’t forget to click here and enter for the chance to win a free box of the new Banana Nut Cheerios…I know y’all love free stuff (because I do) so get clickin’ now!  You have until 8am tomorrow CST when the winner is announced!

    She’s Like the Wind July 9, 2009

Or rather, time is like the wind because this day absolutely positivefrickinlutely flew by.  But I do still love a good “Dirty Dancing” reference.  Nobody puts Baby in the corner :).

Breakfast started out fantastically, thanks to the lovely Sarah from Running to Slow Things Down.  You see, this genius of a gal took the standard breakfast cookie recipe and turned it into Breakfast Drops!  (BTW – I can totally see why she didn’t call them Breakfast Balls – there is just something inherently wrong with that ;)).  Mine were of the ol’ strawberry + coconut variety, and I loved every last drop!

    CIMG4139

Like I said, the morning flew by and before I knew it – bam! – 11:30am and my tummy was rumbling!  Good thing for another killer sammie (same as yesterday) – 2 sliced toasted Ezek, 1/2 smashed avocado, cherry tomatoes, spinach + yellow mustard.  Along with two clementines, it was a good, satisfying lunch.

    CIMG4142

    CIMG4143

Work was supa busy today!  I would look at the clock and suddenly two hours had flown by.  That like never happens.  Unfortunately, I didn’t get out on a lunch walk today but instead worked on a freelance writing project.  Sometimes a girl has got to make sacrifices!

Luckily, my snack made up for the missed walk.  You know how I haven’t exactly been diggin’ the Zoe bars?  Well, I take that back because this Chocolate Delight bar was well – delightful!  It didn’t have any of the funny after tastes the peanut butter and peanut butter chocolate ones did and was perfectly chocolatey.  Nice work Zoe!

    CIMG4144

Since my 9 mile run was planned for after work, I had snacky #2 around 3:30pm as pre-run fuel.  The standard combo: Stonyfield vanilla + blueberries + Zoe’s Cranberry Currant granola.  I think my favorite way to eat Zoe granola is as a topper in yogurt – it gives the whole thing the perfect sweet crunch!

    CIMG4147

After work, I’m not going to lie – I was dreading the 9 mile run.  However, I tried not to think about it.  Instead, I got dressed, laced up the tennies and headed out the door (before I could rationalize not going, because if you give me long enough – I can rationalize ANYTHING).  The first mile was a lil’ rough but I fell into a groove after that.  However, it got raging hot out, my yogurt combo wasn’t sitting too well, and in the end, I had to stop at just over 5 miles.  I walked for another 1/2 mile or so, then guzzled this baby:

    CIMG4148

The Vitamin Water 10 was good – I am still a bit skeptical just how “naturally sweetened” it is.  They use rebiana (stevia extract) along with some others I am not sure about.  Anybody heard of erythritol or crystalline fructose?

I came home a sweaty beast and made this colorful concoction:

    CIMG4152

Tempeh Thai Red Curry!  Totally delish!  I made dinner for myself, my sissy and her boyfriend and it got rave reviews all around.  My sister – who FYI has a sensitive stomach, doesn’t like anything “weird” or “organic” and is not a spice monster – even ate it.  You don’t know how big of a day this is for me!  The mix included:

    brown rice
    TJ’s Thai Red Curry Sauce
    bean sprouts
    onion
    tomato
    carrots
    spinach
1 pkg. three grain organic tempeh

And what’s dinner without somethin’ sweet?

    CIMG4154

That would be 1/2 Monster Cookie to be exact.

Soooo…this gal will be running her 9 miles on Sunday instead.  Ugh, lil’ upset over the run, but I think I might have the ultimate pancake concoction tomorrow morning that is going to blow Miss Chocolate-Covered Katie’s pancake contest out of the water!  Stay tuned tomorrow for all the monster (hint, hint!) goodness ;).

Shower, recipe research, grocery store, freelance writing, possible SYTYCD results show and off to bed.  Woowoo for the weekend – tomorrow is Friday!

Whatcha all up to this weekend?  I’m heading off to my friend’s cabin – holllllaaaa!

Before I start talking about anything related to food, I want to say thank you all so very much for all your wonderful, lovely comments.  Last night, I got home after yoga, grabbed a banana smooshed with almond butter and sat on the couch, reading and rereading all you had to say.  I was actually pretty nervous about writing this post, so I couldn’t have been more touched by your support.  You all had such wise, eloquent things to say, and that is why I am so grateful and happy to be a food blogger.  I encourage you all to go here and read those comments.  At the end of the day, we are all in the same boat: trying to lead the best, healthiest lives we can.  We’ve all got issues and baggage, but in the words of Mimi from Rent, “I’m lookin’ for baggage that goes with mine…”  Your baggage is welcome here anyday.

After waking up and needing an IV drip of coffee ASAP, I scarfed down a bowl of Zoe’s Honey Almond granola with vanilla almond milk alongside a naner smooshed with almond buttah

    CIMG4125

Because of the post of yesterday, I didn’t get to fully review all my the new Zoe Foods yummies!  Check out my review for the Peanut Butter Chocolate bar by clicking here.  Yesterday, I tried the Peanut Butter bar and Cranberry Currant granola. Verdict?  So far, neither bar has rocked my world.  The peanut butter one tasted similar to a Luna Peanut Butter Cookie bar, but with a slightly funny aftertaste.

However, the granola?  YES PLEASE!  Their Zoe mix (made from flaxseed, oatmeal & soybeans) is the basis of all their granolas. It has a totally lovable crunch, a hint of sweetness, a touch of cinnamon and a whole lotta yum!  There were ginormous chunks of cranberries and currants in the mix too.  The honey almond was sweet and nutty  I would totes buy Zoe’s granola again!

Lunch #1 was another ah-may-zing sandwich:  two slices toasted Ezek, 1/2 smashed avocado, 3 halved cherry tomatoes, handful o’ spinach and yellow mustard.  Anything with avocado just can’t be bad, agreed?

    CIMG4127

A handful of work and a 30-minute walk later, it was lunch #2.  The norm yogurt parfait: Stonyfield Organic vanilla, mixed berries + Zoe’s Cranberry Currant granola.

    CIMG4130

A perfectly juicy sweet nectarine for snack…

    CIMG4131

I’m definitely diggin’ the mini-meals these days – gives me something to look forward to for those seemingly never-ending days at work :).  Work was work.  However, after work, I had to haul ace across town for out 6:15pm volleyball game.  While driving like a mad, road-raged woman a responsible young adult, I chowed down on these two lovelies:

    CIMG4133

I nuked Amy’s Spinach and Feta Pocket (seriously, soooo good people – go out and buy this now!) and chowed down on the road.  Not the best way to eat, but hey, this girl was in a rush!  After the pocket, I ate Zoe’s Harvest Apple bar and am so happy to report I liked this one!  It had a really good apple flavor but without the lingering odd aftertaste.  Woowoo!

    Pre-volleyball hydration…

    CIMG4134

Post-volleyball recovery fuel (we won tonight, BTW!!!)…

    CIMG4136

I came home from volleyball to find my sister had concocted Monster Cookies – could I really resist?  I think not.  Not the best way to end the day healthwise, but I have some veggie-ful meals planned for tomorrow so we will make up for it then.  I am actually also going to run 9 miles (my long run of the week) tomorrow because I am heading to a friend’s cabin this weekend. In the end, it all evens out :).

Gosh, it is such a beautiful night out tonight. I just love me my summa, summa, summatime….in the words of our friend, the Fresh Prince.

Have a fabulous evening my friends!
