The original plan to run 18 miles tonight and head MN for the State Fair tomorrow? Scrapped.

New plan? Save money by chillin’ in Madtown, cross thangs off my to-do list, peruse the Farmer’s Market tomorrow morn and run 18 miles in the 60 degree weather in the afternoon.

Perhaps, not overly exciting, but my wallet is bowing down to me in thanks.  He couldn’t take much more abuse.

Friday also means “Fun Lunch Friday” a.k.a. we hummed and hawed before finally decided on a cute lil’ spot called Hawk’s on La Calle de Estado. Think yummy bar + grill food.

Drool. How I managed to go back to the office after that dish of heaven is beyond me – I was even uber-productive.  And it’s Friday.  That’s not normal.

At 5pm, I skedaddled home, ate a small bowl of cereal to tide me over and went to Tarjay for the 2nd Friday night in a row.  My coolness factor is skyrocketing by the minute.  However, I stuck to my list (shocking, I know!) and had to grab some goods to make this:

Ever since I saw this protein-loaded concoction on my gal Janetha’s blog, I’ve been meaning to try it!  Shooo…that girl knows what is up – it was delish!  I happen to ❤ ranch dressing with a yearning, burning passion so this was right up my alley.  Next time, I think I will throw some veg in.  Mad props Queen of Meals and Moves.  Mad props.

FYI: The State Capitol’s dome is one of the largest in the world.  Ya heard it here.

 

Flashback to last night…

Believe it or not, I got EVERYTHING done on my to-do list, with a few modifications of course.  I scrapped the Mint thang because online budgeting was too dang confusing.  Instead, I relied on my old friend Excel to whip up a nice lil’ spreadsheet.  Second, I found no plug-in converter at Target and forgot the oven cleaner.  However, I did pick up some cooking spray, butter, a dress and the new Shape magazine.  Damn you Tarjay!

POM Pomegranate Hibiscus Green Tea

The lovely peeps at POM (shoutout to you Molly!) sent me some of their POMx tea to try.  It’s got a new name, new flavors and is light!  It’s real brewed tea with 100% POM juice and other natural flavas.  I’ve also got Pomegranate Lychee Green Tea + Pomegranate Wildberry White to try!

After reading the label (always a must!), I have one small frustration: fructose + erythritol-sweetened.  Although these claim to be “natural,” we all know the truth from the Vitamin Water 10 shenanigans of yore.

 

This mornin’…

With 15 miles on the brain, I set my alarm for 7am.  That way I could eat, wait an hour then venture out around 8am to get the torture party started.  Unfortunately, the allergies + cold that has been brewing all week reared its head when my alarm went off.  Hence, hit the snooze and slept for another hour.  

I woke-up at 8am, still not feeling the greatest (think sinus headache, sore throat + phlegm), but I downed a plain white bagel with a bit o’ buttah and read some bloggies while I let the food settle.  Then I geared up and headed out!

 

Distance: 15.04 miles (according to MapMyRun)

Time: 2:50

Average pace: 10:00/mile

 

No, I don’t have a Garmin – these are estimates done the old-fashioned way!  If you are a math whiz, you will see 10:00/mile for 15 miles does not equal that time.  However, I am taking into consideration a crapload of stoplights I had to wait for, two Clif Shot Blok + water breaks (2-4 minutes each) and MapMyRun error.

Overall, the run felt pretty good.  I definitely felt sinusy (is that a word?), so I just kept it nice, steady and slow.  The weather was fabulous (60 degrees when I left the house – PERFECT) and since I did it alone with no music or friends running with me, I was very happy.

Happier to devour this when I got home though…

By the time I got home, talked to the ‘rents, showered, ate + grabbed a Cafe Au Lait (1/2 skim milk + 1/2 coffee), I missed most of the Madtown Farmer’s Market :(.  However, I did score 1 bunch of leeks + 1 bunch of beets for $2 from a stand just closing up.

Then it was time to visit a Madison landmark…Ian’s Pizza!

You have no idea how many pieces of this has been consumed by yours truly at about 2:15am on a Saturday night (slash Sunday morning) back in the college days.

I arrived back at la casa de Holly, having shopped around for about 4 miles.  So yes, my legs hate me right now. Hence why I am going to finish chomping my Banana Nut Cheerios + sunflower seeds and finish dranking my green tea + Emergen-C packet to kick this allergy cold and make some dindin.  Gots lots of fruits and veggies to make up for!

I am posting this early because yours truly has TONS she really needs to get done tonight.  Plus, it will most definitely be an early bedtime for that 15-mile long marathon training run tomorrow morn!

43 DAYS AND COUNTING!!!  Ahhhhhhh!

Since I am taking on Sarah’s breakfast challenge to eat a different breakfast for the next week, I needed a change up from yesterday’s yogurt + berries and AB+J sammie.  The obv choice was Overnight Oats!

1/2 cup oats
1/2 cup skim milk
1/4 cup Siggi’s blueberry yogurt
1/4 cup POM juice

Since it was Fun Lunch Friday today, the gang and I headed to one of my Madtown faves for some lovely eats, including this beauty:

Grilled Salmon Salad

This monster has mixed greens, hardboiled eggs, green beans, potatoes, red onion, tomato, grilled salmon and a lemon caper creme fraiche dressing.  Dee-lish-uss!

On the way back to the office, I grabbed a Diet Coke.  Honestly, I haven’t had many Diet Cokes in the past month – I am sooo proud of myself!  Today was a treat, and I enjoyed it with a handful of yummy pretzels.

How am I going to top this fabulous day of eats for dinner?  I have no idea.  All I know is I have a big head of kale screaming my name in the crisper, and it wants to be used up.  Stat.

My to-do list for the evening (PLEASE hold me accountable for this!):

  • Sign-up for Mint.com to track my finances and create a budget
  • Look through insurance info and decide on a health plan
  • Target (pillow, oven cleaner, batteries + two-three prong converter – that’s it!)
  • Bloggy thangs – changes in the works!
  • Clean the living room + Swiffer the hardwood floors

And of course, cook up a gourmet dinner :).

This day was both long but uber-productive (minus the fact I did not make a budget or figure out which insurance to choose last night).  For your reading pleasure, here is a step-by-step guide to a day in the life of The Healthy Everythingtarian herself:

 

6am: My alarm goes off and seconds later, the snooze button is promptly hit.

6:10am: I finally crawl out of bed and haphazardly throw on mismatched running clothes.  I look like I’ve been hit by a bus.  When you have curly hair as I do, the morning is always a surprise as to what shape your hair has been molded into from the night before (this morning: a Medusa + Carrot Top mix)

6:20am: I walk reluctantly out the door and begin my 4-mile run.

7am: I arrive home, stretch a bit before deciding I’m too dang hungry.  I abandon stretching in favor of this:

7:15am: Since I eat mondo fast, it takes only mere minutes to shovel down breakfast before hopping in the shower.  I follow that up with getting dressed, taking my multi-vitamin and spritzing on perfume (Burberry London, in case anyone is wondering).

7:30am: To save myself time, I decide today is going to be a “no make-up day,” although I tell people it’s to let my skin breathe in the fresh air.  In reality, I’m lazy.

7:40am: Out the door to grab a coffee and walk the 1 mile to work.

7:47am: I decide I am not feeling hot coffee after a hot run and choose this instead:

8:05am: I arrive at work, talk to my boss (who is leaving for Paris today – super jealous) and turn on the comp.  I do the norm morning routine – check the e-mail(s), People.com and my bank account.  I save the bank account for last because usually I try to put off knowing how poor I am for as long as I can. Then I work.

11am: My stomach is wildly grumbling.  Enter in new fave snack:

12:30pm: I take a working lunch, knowing the Internet guy could call at any minute…

2:30pm: The ATT repairman calls!  My co-workers know how important this is to me, so one of them gives me the keys to her car to drive back to my apartment to meet him.  I spend the next hour laying on the floor while Jerry plays with the antique wires (I live in an old building – I like to say it has “character”).  I fiddle around wondering if it will ever get fixed….suddenly, all the lights turn green on the modem!

I HAVE INTERNET!  THANK YOU WORLD!

3:45pm: I head back to work in a jovial mood.  Then my dad calls to say he will be driving through Madison on his way back from a work event.  You know what that means?  Free dindin!  I munched on a serving (and 1/2) of these honey wheat pretzels on my way back to the office:

5pm: Daddio picks me up, and I show him the new apartment (ahem, flat).  Then we head to the cutest lil’ pizza joint around the corner from my place where we have some kick arse salad + ‘zza:

6:30pm: Daddio has to leave and drops me back off at work to meet with my co-workers to go grab some dranks and spend some quality work family time together.  I love them already.

10pm: I arrive home after laughing my arse off all night.  Blogging time – now that I have Internet, I am happily blogging from the comfort of my bare living room.

11pm: (Which for the record, is in 12 minutes) I crawl into bed, lights out and do the dang thang again bright and early in the morn.  Minus the running.

Running Well, Wedding Bells + Internet Hell August 16, 2009

Yep, that pretty much sums up my weekend.

Let’s start with the good stuff – I got up at 7am bright n’ early on Saturday morning and ate a nice carb-heavy pre-run meal consisting of a 1/2 cup Special K with 1/2 cup skim milk and a chocolate chip granola bar.  There is no better running fuel than pure white carbs.

Then, yours truly did what she has NEVER done before – run 16 miles!

The first 9 miles went well despite the Minnesota heat and humidity.  I made sure to make frequent water stops (also stopping to splash water on my head to cool down) before returning back to my friend Ashley’s where I popped 3 Clif Black Cherry Shot Bloks and some Diet Cherry Pepsi (don’t judge).  Then Ashley headed out with me to finish the last 7 miles, and my other friend Megan joined us for the last 3 miles.  My friends are seriously the best :).

In the end? The run went AWESOME.  I finished in my marathon pace of just under 10:00 minutes/mile, equaling about 2 hours and 40 minutes.  I seriously think I could have gone even further. It was that kind of glorious running day.

Seriously…if I could marry Indian food I would.  Shhhhh, don’t tell McMac I am cheating on him ;).

After lunchie, it was off to IKEA –  ummm, holy anxiety!  Soooo many people, soooo many things to look at and tooooo little time.  Luckily, I had my trusted Meggy Moo in tow.  If this isn’t a friend, I don’t know what is:

Then, I gussied myself up and headed off to my girl Charlotte’s wedding!  Charlotte and I studied abroad together in college in London, and we’ve pretty much been soulmates ever since.  LOVE that girl.  I also got to see Brittany (who also studied abroad with us) for the first time in years.  LOVE that girl too.

Yeah, that’s right.  My girl Char had a plethora of CHEESECAKES at her wedding instead of regular ol’ wedding cake.  That is reason #4,276 that we are friends.  Brittho and I may have split an additional piece of Key Lime Cheesecake.  Just sayin…

When I got home, I crashed harder than Lindsey Lohan’s career.

After almost 10 hours of glorious sleep, I woke up to coffee and a lovely chat with Ashley.  Then, right as I started contemplating eating Ash’s carpet, it was 10:30am and time for me to meet another fabulous lady you all know – Ms. Angharad!

We met at the Uptown Diner…looks like a total dive from the outside, but inside you will find such fabulous delicacies such as this…

After brekkie, I skedaddled back on the road (wasn’t I just driving?) back to Madison.  Five LONG hours later, I arrived safely.  After successful shopping trip #2 at the co-op (including a free coupon for a French Meadow bread product and a bottle of organic agave syrup – score!), I made it back to my apartment to find the Internet still not working.

I can’t handle this.  ATT is apparently coming on Tuesday to fix it, but that means another two days of paying for coffee at the cute coffeeshop for free Wi-Fi.  I guess there could be worse thangs…

I just scrolled through the post and realized it’s practically a marathon long, which by the way, the Twin Cities Marathon is in T-minus 49 days.  Eeeeeeek!

Good morning dudes…I don’t think I’ve ever blogged this late.  Being a g’ma, it’s often hard enough just to find me up past midnight :).

Sorry Heart Thrive peeps…the Cranberry is BY FAR my least favorite.

However, my snack more than made up for it.  A homemade concoction of Banana Nut Cheerios + sunflower seeds a.k.a the ying (sweet) and the yang (salty).  Makes for maximum satisfaction.

I can’t believe I have totally forgotten to tell you how WELL my first week at the new job went.  My boss is fantastic.  My co-workers are incredibly helpful and funny.  And there is minimal scanning involved in the job.  Give it up!

Yesterday, we instituted Three Question Thursday at work a la Kristin, and today we proclaimed Fridays as “Fun Lunch Friday!”  Where is the most obviously funnest place to go ever?  Chipotle, obv!

Friday flew by and before I knew it, I was done with my first week of work.  Woowoo!  Then, I skedaddled on to my new flat (yes, I want to be British so I am calling it “my flat”) to whip up a quick dindin before hitting the road BACK across the border to Minnesota for a wedding.

This bugger was delish!  Also quite easy to make: I sauteed lots of kale in EVOO + garlic (ends up tasting a lot like Kath’s “Kale Chips” – which if you haven’t tried, you must!) then stufffed it in an Ezekiel tortilla and topped with a Morningstar Spicy Black Bean Burger. Voila!  Dinner is served.

After I finally arrived back in the Minneapolis, I met up with my besties for some drinks at the bar where our other bestie works.  Quite vague details, I know.  However, I had a slight headache and was uber-tired from the drive (anybody else MORE tired from driving than actually working out and doing something active?), so I munched on some bar popcorn (a couple cups?) and just chatted.  Drinks before a 16-mile run doesn’t sound like a good idea to me.

Tomorrow’s agenda: run, shower, IKEA run and then wedding time!  Woowoo!

Meet my new love...McMac!

I can’t even express how hard I fell in love with McMac.  At first opening of the box, I knew me and him were meant to be.  He’s sleek, suave and ultra sophisticated.  Just my kind of guy.

The even better news?  The same day I got my new comp (shoutout to Daddy Everythingtarian for helping his dear daughter purchase said McMac!), my Internet equipment also came!  As of 8pm tomorrow, I will be with computer AND with Internet.  Release the doves and let the animals run free – freedom is here people!

I don’t think I even begin to say how much I missed y’all.  Even though moving into the new hippie abode has been taking up lots of time as has starting a brand new job, I knew something was missing from my day-to-day activities.  So THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU for being patient and sticking with me through all of it. Your dedication shall be rewarded my people.

Some pre-run fuel for my mid-week 8 miler (which for the record, was one of the BEST runs I have had in a LONG time!  I think my body does not run well in the heat :()…

Now, I sit happily blogging at the cutest lil’ coffeeshop (with free WiFi, yesssss!) around the corner from my apartment with a decaf skim chai latte (brewed with real tea bags…not the concentrate crap).  

Sidenote: If you drink cow’s milk, lowfat and nonfat milk are perfect post-workout recovery fuel.  It is the perfect balance of carbohydrates + protein to repair those muscles.  Just make sure you buy organic and preferably from small farms – hopefully the milk will come from happier cows :).

 

In happy moving news: I joined my local co-op which is a 5 minute walk from the apt!  It is adorable, stocks a plethora of of local, organic produce and fair trade products and I am part-owner.  I also joined a gym, which I really like so far.  I went to a yoga class on Monday that kicked my arse.  Love it.  Do you like how the two first two things I do when moving to a new city are find the nearest grocery store and gym?  Haha…that is healthy living dedication!

Alrighty peeps, I’m rollin’ out to go read blogs, spend quality time with McMac and pack for my weekend trip back home to MN for a wedding.  The weekend also might involved a lovely brunch outing with our fave Brit…wink wink.

My highlight of the day today was having a High School Musical jam session with one of my fab new co-workers in the office.  It ruled.
